Subject: Cat C15 help, oil cooler

Southern Mn
Yesterday hauling corn I developed a small oil leak. It’s a 2002 6nz C15. I determined it was above the oil filter housing, and below the oil cooler. This morning I got the cooler off. I’m guessing it was the Oring towards the back as thats where most of the oil was sitting. My questions are, should I pull the oil filter housing also and put new gaskets on it?? It doesn’t look like it leaked between the block and housing. Is it common for one of the orings to fail like that? I hear when the cooler fails it’s a mess. That’s the next question, should the cooler be replaced while it’s off or run it? 652,000 miles. Original as far as I know. Any other thoughts on it??

Pics are of it apart before and after I cleaned it.

Just my opinion, and it's worth what you paid for it, but I would do the cooler for sure, and if there is any hint of any leaks on the filter housing I would do it too. I'm a "while I'm this far in" kind of guy and I don't like doing things again in the near future if I could have prevented it the first time.

Not sure what cat gets for the cooler, but aftermarket ones are out there for around 500, NO WAY i would put the used one back in. You did all the work to get there, just replace the cooler then live a stress free life not worrying about that component LOL.

I have to agree, got all the o-rings from cat, priced it with them and it was $1,100. Decided against that, called local truck shop and got a price from them $2,500 minus a core fee but he didn't know how much that was. Now to find a aftermarket one that can be here Monday morning so truck can hit the road Tuesday morning.

Pull the base and reseal while you are there. At the minimum, get the cooler pressure tested. Should be able to be done at any decent truck repair shop.

Do the cooler since you're in there, it's a damn mess if/when they go bad. You won't have to worry with it replaced.
Check to see what gaskets are worth for filters housing and go from there. You're that far in not much more work to do the rest.
