Subject: JI CASE 930 pulling power ?

Southern IL
My search has ended for an older 80-100hp tractor... Got a good deal on a 930 at a consignment sale.. I see its been split recently due to all the bolts being new, I figure the clutch is New by the way it shifts or either they took it apart and didnt like what they seen...so they sold it....My question is what kind of disk I can pull with it...did some corn ground already pulling a 14foot Deere 210 with it, couldnt even tell it was back there. I also Have an 18.5 foot MF 520 that I'd like to try out on it.I have it hooked up in the yard now...still a few days off from trying it out. what can I expect out of a 930 as for power ?, not really worried about usen it to much as I have larger tractors that get the job done, but this 930 is kind of fun to drive, so whats the biggest imp you guys have pulled with one ? thankya

Looks like a 1966 or 1967 . We pulled a 15 ft disc and a 18ft field cult. with ours. Real good tractor very easy on fuel. I got real good at power shifting between 1 high and 4 low. Grab both levers let up on foot pedel a little and hit the clutch. Never ground the gears either.

Early 930 had the wonderful case wet clutch- when they went to the "comfort king" - what a misnomer- did they change to a dry clutch?

Bought one new in 66 and in 72 added another 67 model. Pulled a 4 X 16 plow with it for many years about 8" deep, 18' IH #45 field cultivator and a 19.5 foot IH 480 flex frame disk.

Third gear with the plow, fourth with the FC and depending on bean stubble or plowing third or fourth on the disk.

Nice thing about that 401.... a tad over 4 gal/hour fuel with the plow.

Not sure if it was just the way it was ordered by the dealer or if it was a switch between the 66 and 67 model years. The 66 used the cotton string fuel filters with a 3rd canister final up under the hood and the 67 used 2 spin on filters. Was always a pain hand pumping that third one full on filter changes.

Both my 66 and 67 models we had (still have the 67 with the factory cab) were dry clutches

Dad had one for years, traded it away and when we came home from vactation, Grandpa had bought it back! Pulled 16' chisel plow with 2 8' disk drills in spring, summmer-fallow all summer with the 16'. Plenty of soup for that. It was an early Comfort King (round fenders). Gave up on the duals after a couple busted axles. Always thought it was pretty good, up and out of the dirt compared to the old Case 500's.

We used to pull a 16-ft. deep tillage cultivator (Chisel plow with sweeps) at 5 mph, 3rd gear. Also used our 930 on a 21-ft. John Deere BWF tandem disc - don't know how that compares to your disc. Good old tractors, usually hard to start, give her a sniff of ether or use the manifold heater but not both at the same time.

"SOMEWHERE"  I've still got the sales brochure for the '63 model that my father bought new, and I still have.

Will look some more later, and post it if i find it.

When they changed from Round Guard to Square Guard, didnt they also change for a chain driven  Final Drive , to a gear drive ?

Dad bought a 930 a few years ago for old times sake. We do end up using it a fair bit to run an auger and pull a 10' deep tiller to work border strips. he told me today they used to put down NH3 with one in the 60's. I can't imagine putting down NH3 without a cab!! Us young guys haven't experienced everything yet!!!

Ours is now the dedicated FEL and auger tractor. It struggles pulling 60' of diamond harrows up some of our hills....we used to use it to pull a 16' disker (one way with seeding box)...

Ham, that's right. One time, dad sent mom and us little boys to town for parts for the 930. She was armed with s/n and everything. The parts guy looked at her and asked, "Square fenders or round?" Boy, did she hit the roof!! She still laughs about it all these years later.
