Subject: Ridge till row cleaners

Northwest Iowa
Want some input on what some of you ridge tillers are running for row cleaners. We have been ridging for about 20 yrs. and have run Hinikers and are currently running B&H row cleaners but thinking about switching to the new dawn coulter combos. Any input would be great. Thank you

Good question I have been looking too.
I have been using Hiniker and like how they work but would like to move to a bigger planter.
I would like to try Dawn's Gfx but will not fit a Case planter.

We find there has been an evolution of row cleaners for ridge till as ridgetill and corn genetics have evolved. The 1572 combo with a Ripple blade leading slices the tough bt stalks and rootballs then the Trashwheels straddling the rear of the coulter (and close to the gage wheels) clear the top of the ridge with less soil disturbance than in the past in ridge till. Today stalks are tougher, yields and residue are higher, ridges are lower and generally there is less soil moved back and forth in ridgetill these days. The 1572 combo is becoming more popular in ridgetill areas. Thanks for your consideration. Jim at Dawn

For the last six years we have just run yetter residue cleaners on our 1200 CIH and have gotten along just fine on our ridges, just take off enough to get the residue out of the way. Have started using a root-ball puller in the fall and come spring time the rootball left in the ground is just mush and the disk openers have no problem cutting through them.

I bought the Martin Wraparound row cleaners for my 7100 JD, back in 2001 when I started ridging.
I'd like to add the cam adjustments to them.

Tell me about your root ball puller. What kind is it, is it wearing well, and other particulars if you could, please.

We have been looking at them, and they seem like they could speed things up in the fall.

We have been using a summers super coulter in the fall and in the spring run a buffalo rolling stalk cutter(30' 12mph cover alot of ground). Cuts stalks up nice and opens up the ground a little to dry out. On the planter just have the yetter cleaners. Do about 75% corn on corn have had excellent stands. Hey h2oski01 looks like you do a nice job what is a root ball puller?

While we are not supporting the Case Planter for this year, it is possible that if you put the long links on it is possible. I am still unclear as to whether the long link is all that available from CNH. I have heard that they will put it on the 1200 but not the 1250.

this is our rootball puller from Orthman, we went together with some friends and bought a sixteen row together. We run it at about 12-13 mph so a 16 row gets alot done in a day. You can do it right behind the combine or later in the fall and it still does a great job, Fun to run. Close to the best and most important peice of equipment we have in our ridgeing system, I think it really helped our corn on corn stands. Between the two of us and renting out to a few other neighbors it has gone over close to 7-8 thousand acres and shows little wear, and we do have rocks in our area but they are no problem.

Will you be supporting the Case Planter for next year.?
What interferes on the Case planter?
I think long links are available but you add 10"(14 to 24").
I really like your remote adjust.
I could do headlands and do my ridges without stopping.

thanks

Subject: RE: Ridge till row cleaners different ballgame if you are using a "root puller"

Driftless SW Wisconsin

IF you are running over ridgetilled stalks in the fall with a "root puller" then what I said above is not applicable.

Just the development and existence of "root pullers" is an example of how ridgetill has changed in the past 20 years or so.

Originally the goal in ridgetilling into cornstalks in the spring was to separate the stalk from the rootbal and just plant right down the top. However corn plants have evolved genetically so that in many cases the stalk just does not separate from the rootball as easily in the spring as it used to years ago.

If you are using a root puller then many other row cleaner options will work. That is basically worked ground.

I was assuming the old style ridgetill without using a stalk puller pass in the fall.
