Southern MD | Anyone ever plant winter rye or wheat in the spring? I bought rye to seed this fall to harvest for cover crop seed and didn’t get near as much as I wanted planted. Would it still make if I were to plant it in the spring ? We are wet and doesn’t look like it will happen this fall/winter. Never had this problem before. Most rain in a year since they started recording. |

Northwest Ohio | Can you fly it on ? In your locale, cereal rye should germinate thru the winter. |

| It will not vernalize and produce a seed head if planted in spring. You could try to plant it early in December if it dries out, good chance it could turn out ok. |

Roanoke, IN | You are past the rye for grain planting window in your area. I have planted rye the week before Christmas for a cover and it worked fine. This was in a field planned for wheat that didn't get planted because of wet.
You will be severally disappointed in the grain yield if planted this late, but it can still make a good amount of biomass for cover next spring. My advice would be to save the seed for next year or use for a cover crop if you get a decent window in December to plant. |

Oskaloosa, Iowa 52577 | When we planted some in late April it reached about eighteen inches and of course did not bear seeds.
Fall planted even in December reaches five feet in mid June. |

WC MN | Cereal rye grows no matter what, fly it on, spin it on, whatever it takes. Does your ground even freeze? |

Scranton | I've planted winter rye in the spring and it didn't get 12 inches tall...it spread out more like a lawn than going vertical. It will not produce seed, but still a good cover and no need to worry about it getting away from you. |
