What kind of road seed can you get out of them with a 26ft hopper behind. Are they doggie in the field and on the road or have decent power. would be with 22.5 tires.

Star Prairie, WI
A1 on up with the Allisons are topped out about 65. If you want speed, and an obsolete transmission, get an original 915 with the Cat powershift. They're good for 75-80 wound up tight. (Much to the ire of an Alabama state trooper, back more than 25 years ago.)

Most top out around 60 to 65, governed by engine speed. You can run slightly taller tires or have the engine top RPMs set higher if you need to go a little faster.

That's with the Cummins Big Cam III at 400 hp and the Allison automatic.

They are geared well to pull out of a field, and you will win all drag races unless you come up against another truck with an Allison, and more hp!!!!

You won't even know that 26' trailer is back there unless it's full of lead and has chisel shanks instead of axles and tires. :)

does the 915 have a standard 5th wheel setup. I seen some trucks the trailer is greatly slanted down hill from the hitch. what is the best size tires to run? any problems with DOT?

The 915A1 trucks that I have seen have a standard 5th wheel plate hitch.

Many, or all, of the 6 wheel drive trucks (not the 915A1 trucks!) have a 5th wheel hitch that is higher because it can tip side to side as well as front to back. I think you could put wedges in it to not rock side to side. Some of those may have a larger trailer pin size as well. Some folks buy the 6 wheel drives and then put a regular hitch on them.

A 915A1 with 22.5 rims will have a hitch height very similar to any other over the road truck. These trucks were made to mainly be used on roads, and the 6 wheel drive trucks to do the off road work.

The 6 wheel drive trucks weigh more, sit higher, have smaller engines, and have a lower top speed, usually. You can find them with tall single tires or regular sized duals.

Tires: Those tall singles that some folks put on to look cool or gain some traction or clearance would not be my choice to use down the highway pulling a trailer. I think mine are all running a 11.00Rx22.5 tire.

I have had my trucks get a DOT inspection sticker, but have never been actually pulled over. There are many folks using these trucks in many lines of work.

Steel Soldiers dot com is a great site to learn more about these trucks. Here is a link to the 5 ton section of the forum.

How large of a grain trailer do you think you could legally pull loaded?

You should be able to pull any legal grain trailer.

We have a harvest overload permit, so 80,000 plus 12,000 pounds, and it handles that fine.

A longer trailer helps with "bridge" length if you are needing to scale more for a DOT weigh station.
