. Are they dyed before they are shipped?

My wife recently bought a bag of these. Ate a few right away and they were normal. After about a week, they looked like yours. I assume they were dyed and it eventually soaked through the peel.

Check this Wikipedia, it seems that pink flesh is a somewhat common McIntosh apple characteristic.

our McIntosh never showed that characteristic, but John has it right. There is a nursery somewhere in Vancouver area-on an island, I think, that specializes in pink-fleshed apples. For all the varieties we once had, never had a single one with pink inside. As many varieties have been cross-bred for added characteristics, it may be that this is the result. We had a Winesap apple. In my adult life I have never tasted another like it, which leads me to believe what is marketed as Winesap are hybridized, as in Stayman Winesap....ain't the same

Why would you just assume they were dyed??? I've never even heard of such a thing being done.

Dark deep red color on the outside and about feel smooth like a wax applied to them., unlike any other apples I have eaten before.

That was my experience as well. McIntosh are my favorite. Have probably eaten thousands of them. Rarely have I ever seen a mac that is totally red, all the way around. These were, and very shiny with a waxy feel. I understand that some varieties can have pink flesh. But these were white flesh right after they were brought home but after about a week, you could clearly see where pink/red had begun to seep into the flesh. Still white near the core. Wife picked them up at Walmart, packaged in a white paper bag with a handle. Told her to avoid those. Wouldn't be surprised they came from China.

This is new crop apple season now so I doubt that you will find many imported apples. During the off season, like in summer, you sometimes find imported apples from the Southern Hemisphere from Chile and New Zealand where their apples are in season. I don't think you will see an apple from China.
Storage apples are often coated with an edible wax to make them last longer in storage.

I saw a commercial for one of the hard ciders, Angry Orchard I think. They have a new red variety that's made from some European apple that has really red flesh, even redder than that. Wasn't paying much attention, but it did remind me of this.

Could be the last of old crop apples hitting the market, or being passed off as new crop.

One of the better red fleshed apples was discovered growing on a farm in this area.

We have a friend with a very diverse commercial orchard that has half dozen of these. Excellent apple.
