Northeast Nebraska
1997 fld120 with 3406E

Ran fine most of the day. Started and restarted numerous times throughout the day. Let it set for about 3 hours and it wouldn’t fire.

Fuel primer pump pushes firm as if it has plenty of fuel. 4000 miles on filters

Check engine light is not on. Coolant level is good. Has oil pressure

No fuses in battery box.

Don’t know what else to check.

Had similar problems in a 6NZ. Crawl underneath and through the inspection hole pry the flywheel a little bit. Then turn key and let all computers cycle then crank it. I have to let all my electronics “wake up” before I crank mine over. Hope it helps.

Cam sensor if the ecm doesn't see rpm's via the cam sensor it doesn't know you're cranking it.

You can crank it till the gauges come up and see if it reads rpms to diagnose. Had one go intermittently bad on a 3406E, it would randomly die no codes as the engine dosen't think its running. Finally cranked it till tack booted up and it had no signal 0rpm, showed 200rpm with the cam sensor working. This was on an international that only used one sensor for cam/engine speed.

Between Omaha and Des Moines, 7 miles South of I80

I'll add a picture, of the "Early style" 3406E model RPM/Timing sensor.

When I used to work for cat you could pretty well diagnose the bad cam sensor by tapping on it with a wrench or socket extension or something of that nature, but not hard cuz it can break off. Then try to start the truck . limped a lot of semis into the shop hundreds of miles away where I could replace the sensor

Thanks everyone. It was the timing sensor.

$205 and 5 minutes later we were up and running

The tach had been acting funny for a few months. Occasionally it would read higher than normal RPM, shutting the engine off and restarting always resolved the tach issue. That pretty much threw a red flag for the timing sensor after reading the responses here.

Thanks again!
