It ain’t pipe and it ain’t drill stem.

That is upset tubing.

I would not pay that much for used tubing. Should be able to find new reject tubing in that price range. When the oilfield sells tubing it is because it is no longer fit for them to use. Salt water runs through it and it will rust from the inside out over time.

I will also add rock wall isn’t near the oil patch.

Thanks for posting that link. I was thinking of getting some pipe, had no clue about the saltwater and rod rubbing insides of pipe. Won't be buying any sight unseen now.

WY, OK
Since distance apparently isn't an issue try:

http://meritenterprises.com/ Out of Tulsa back about 10 years ago they were worth a trip from WY built our entire new corral system with their stuff.

Also a few good places I know in CO if that isn't too far:

These guys test pipe, all theirs is clean and in good shape have bought lots of it there:

http://www.rockymtninspection.com/Drill_Pipe_Inspection/Welcome.htm...

And have bought some from these guys:

West Texas

I built my corrals and gates out of 2 3/8 oilfield pipe that came from stripper wells. The above article is correct. I have many spots that have rusted through during the past 22 years.  Sometimes this pipe is subject to crowding but I have had no trouble with any of it collapsing with the cow and bull pressure. $33 sounds pretty high to me.

It is a crap shoot really. I have two semi loads of pipe fence at my place. Most of it is the reject new pipe but some is used. I don’t remember off the top of my head the color codes but most used tubing is tested by the oil companies before selling it. They check (X-ray maybe? ) for wall thickness and it either passes and they keep using it or it fails and they sell it off. There are different degrees of failing represented by different markings.

Some used pipe is ok and virtually all of it will be fine for some period of time but stuff that is badly worn won’t last. The labor costs more than the material so at least in my eyes it makes sense to buy good pipe and have it last a lifetime instead of having to redo it ten years down the road.

By the way I have no affiliation with go bob and I think their prices are high but they have some very good info. If you get the livestock weekly newspaper there are usually a lot of pipe advertisements in there for big pipe yards that likely have some reject pipe.

I would look for some plastic lined pipe.  It is abundant if you ask for it and you won't have any trouble working with it once you learn how.

Buying the plastic lined material will not cost any more but will be nearly bullet proof for your lifetime.  It is heavier and will reduce the total feet you can haul in a load, but other than that it is a great way to buy used pipe safely.

Edit to add:  There is a lot of it around Electra, TX and Wichita Falls, TX.  Just search craigslist and you will find it.

Just a thought on used pipe. Isn't the potential there to be radioactive?

Yep, don't ever use oil field pipe to build a stripper pole. Most other uses its fine.

Yes, Our local salvage requires all scrap metal to come through a radiation detector. If the alarm goes off, they will ask you to circle around and come through it again. If the alarm goes off again, they will not buy that load.

Most pipe dealers will have a geiger counter to check for radiation because they don't want to buy it themselves.

Just ask them to check it for you before you load it.  Pretty easy task to do in a few minutes of time.

GoBob is some good info but remember he is trying to sell you what he has. I have oil field tubing that’s been in the corral for over 30 years and none of it has rusted. Stay away from tubing that has a plastic lining or has concrete in it. You can find good 2 3/8 for .75 per foot. Lots of 2 3:8 and 2 7/8 Used around here for corrals, posts, corners, buildings, trusses.
