Anybody on here feeding angus steers crossed with holsteins? Looking at breeding some cows like this and the steer buyer is saying he will pay $0.15/lb premium for these over just straight holstein steers. On the other hand, the feed salesman is telling me they don't grow as fast and he would feed a holstein anyday over a cross. Just looking for somebody who has actually done it to give a little feedback. TIA.

50/50 shot on them taking angus traits or holstein traits. I have about 80 right now and they do very well. Seems some straight holsteins are so dairy they don't fatten up as well as i'd like.

all over Iowa

I would feed a crossbred anyday over a straight Holstein. But the higher pay price on the finished crossbreds is not as easy to find as some would have you think.

Had some Holstein and angus/Holstein cross in the same pen last year, just sold them this spring. They all were bought and came in the same day, Holsteins were 475-500lbs. Crosses were 400-425lbs. Fed and treated equally all year. Crosses went out at 1625, Holstein barely over 1500.

Good luck.

My thoughts seem like they were confirmed. He wants me to feed more holsteins as they eat more corn and he sells more feed. Typical salesman lol.

What would your holsteins throw for calves if you use a Polled Herford bull? I seem to remember that would get you mostly black/white faced and a mix of red white faced offspring and very littel straight looking holsteins.

Uncle did it years ago and they looked decent. I’ve got two stein/ angus cross calves now but too early to tell. I got the feeling they will have Holstein frame on them.

I haven't really thought about that, but I am open to pretty much any option.

Feed some since the dairy I get calves from started crossing based on genetics and breed+back. You will get one once in a while that will be a little more long legged, but you also get the one that "passes" as black; evens out.
Maybe should feed them a bit of roughage, I feed 'em with my steins due to lack of separate facilities.

go with a black gelbveih or simmental. Angus dont carry enough muscle mass to make the holstein any better. Putting a simmental or gelbvieh bull on them will help them carry more muscle which will help you sell them at a premium to holstein... possibly. If the packer is really hungry for cattle they might bid higher.. if not, you'll get holstein price just like everyone else.

holsteins lack muscle confirmation as well as ribeye size which is the biggest reason they are discounted to colored cattle. This is not a knock on the angus breed (we have a whole herd of red angus cows), but crossing that holstein with something that carries a little more muscle mass will help your chances with getting a premium.

Wouldn't they just add more frame to an already big framed Holstein? Can't speak for the Gelbvieh but most of the Simmental cattle I have seen in my life are plenty big they wouldn't tone down a Holstein much.

Isn't there something about them maturing earlier than beef calttle as well. The one time I had one it was full grown frame at 14 months and pretty well finished by 16 months. We even separated it so we could push it a little harder than the rest when it got so big so quick. It was all black and passed for Angus at the sale.

I am definitely not a Hereford guy but a Hereford/Holstein cross is a pretty good cross.

Here's what a Polled Hereford x Holstein frequently looks like. You'll see a lot of those in the beef herds of former dairymen shortly after masking the switch. We used an Angus and a Polled Hereford the last year or two before we quit milking. It was pretty common to see the feather neck pattern show up for another generation or two. Some still looked just angular enough that the Holstein part of the pedigree couldn't be hidden in a sale barn ring. Udder quality on half-blood heifers was usually the weakest point on a Hereford instead of an Angus as the cross back then.

Simmentals or Gelbvieh would be a good option, too. Frame size wouldn't be a big concern compared to 20 years ago. Frame has downsized and moderated considerably since then. You'll find plenty of frame 6 and 7 Angus bulls today. Go back 30 years and you'd find the yellow patterned Simmentals like one guy a vet always mentioned. "He had those big, framey things and put a couple cows in the stanchion barn to milk. They were so big, they stood with their back feet on the other side of the gutter!"

I've been AI breeding my Holstein milk cows to Limflex bulls. The limo adds muscle to the bony frame of the Holstein, and the Angus keeps the frame size moderate. I will have the first calves on the ground the end of October, so I couldn't tell you how they'll end up. I did a lot of research on this. Google it and see what you think.
