| Looking to put an older Shaver post driver on a JD 6140D. I was planning to use one of the loader SCV’s to supply oil to the driver, but wasn’t sure what would be best for the return. I’m assuming it needs to be restriction free. Could I tee into the hitch or rear SCV return lines? There also appears to be an unused port right where the other returns are at, I thought I might be able to put a fitting in there as well. Does anyone have any insight on the matter? | |||

Between Omaha and Des Moines, 7 miles South of I80 | I can't help on that particular tractor, but have a link to an older thread, where I have drawing of the adapter that goes into Dad's 1964 JD4020 tranny oil filler tube. https://talk.newagtalk.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=523307&mid=4269128#M4269128
Yes, it does need to be "restriction free" so it can dump the oil FAST. We have had to buy new return hoses, and they were just big 1" diesel fuel line hoses, that you can get at the farm hardware store. (old one blew out (at a rub spot) and shot Dad with hydraulic oil)

Big Sky Country | john deere would sell you a cover for filter cover on transmission for a 4020 that had a port to dump oil back in. I had shaver for yrs on industrial 3010. 25 gpm pump. it would start starving pump after maybe 15 full strokes. J.D. mech said no harm to overfill trans, that worked good. Use 4055 now. It don't starve for oil, probably smaller pump and bigger 'reservoir' On both, I use a bell reducer to dump return oil in where you fill it, one inch i.d. hose. Tried returning thru quick couplers and you lose tremendous amount of whack. Had driver on 3 pt, so return quite short. On the 3010, there was a plugged extra port on hi pressure 'manifold'---I took supply right there---driver is HD10 and was very quick cycling. I'd never mount 3 pt again. Always twisted around with foot on clutch, feel every lick and think big tires take some whack away. I see 4wd posted while I was yakking on phone. lotsa info on old thread. good point on make sure you got closed center valve on driver. Edited by littlejo 6/11/2018 12:38

NEMO | I've not checked to see what the threads are under the fill cap but if they are pipe threads it looks like that would be an easy place for you to dump the oil. On second thought you may want to check and see if that cap is the only vent for the housing. Edited by AR1920 6/11/2018 12:41

northeastern Ohio | On my JD 6300 I made an adapter to fit the return line onto the fill tube. I found a fitting with matching threads and then welded a barb end onto it to attach the hose. I screw this adapter into the fill hole and then use a stainless clamp to hold the hose onto the barb end.

Oregon | The last chapter of Manual Section 55 has all you need to know, including an illustration. "Some implements, such as a post pounder, require use of a high flow or fast return-to-sump connection. If a high flow return connection is needed, remove cap (A) on valve stack housing and attach hose fitting to connector. Motor return parts are available from your John Deere dealer." -Mike Edited by mschultz 6/11/2018 18:55

Central ND | 6400 filler/ dipstic tube. I use a 1 inch plastic air seeder hose for a return, a smaller hose will restrict oil too m uch, on the end I have a elbo and about a 3 inch pipe nipple screwed in that I stick directly into the dipstick tube of the 6400..... then wrap it up with towel or plastic to seal off from flys and dust and water entering.
