Considering upgrading combines and wondering if there is a big difference in performance between the 2 heads. Our 893 needs rebuilt, but it has been a great head and we could rebuild it ourselves for a allot cheaper than a few year old 608c. We don't need a chopping head, so just wondering if the newer series is worth it?

So. IL
Yes, big difference in them. I would hate to go back to a 893.

Go with the 608. You won't be sorry.

Longer gathering chains and decks let you drive faster with a bigger combine without having to run the rolls as fast. 600s are better. Longer too so it shallows your feederhouse angle.

Happy day when the 893 went down the road. 608 is a great head.

I’ll be the odd man out. While I agree that a 600c series is a big step up in many regards, I really miss our 893 more often than not.

We never really pushed as hard as most so some of the features on the new series don’t do us any good. The longer stalk rolls do seem to be better but imo not as good the calmer rolls we had on the 893. Gathering chains are def an improvement, no question there.

If you have down corn like we do usually someplace every year, we cannot get the newer one to pick up down corn like our old one. The stalk rolls don’t stick out far enough or something, the 893 it seemed would almost pick stalks right out of the dirt.

I guess the snouts are heavier and better with the wear strips, but also much more money to buy new when you run them in the ground.

We had a headlight system on our older head and it was flawless, IMO the Deere system is not as good. Especially when you want to run the points right on the ground.

This is a 13 model 608 so it’s got the updated features. Considering what we gave to trade I wish we would have kept our older one.

These were both ran on an 11 9770sts that we still have so no difference in machine pushing it. I could run just as fast in corn with the old as the new. Never had a problem with gearboxes as some have had so maybe we were just lucky.

I’m sure I’m the odd man on this one but I miss our 893.

We like the 93 heads, if the new ones were lighter with all the aluminum would be one thing, but they aren’t, but, what do I know.

93 heads were good. 6xx series are GREAT. You won't be disappointed. How anyone can say a x93 series will pick up down corn better than a 600 series is beyond me. We run one of each for two years. The first year, we had a lot of down corn. The 600 series is FAR superior in down corn. The 600 series is definitely a lot heavier. Gathering chains will outlast the '93 series 3 to 1.

Se wisc.
Those chains better run a lot longer than the 93 at the price of them. Been wanting a 608 fur a while. But every time I look at neighbors fields picked with 608 I am not impressed with head loss with 608. Has anyone compared the cost of rebuild on the two heads. Also there were problems with oil bath gear cases on certain 608 years.

608 sits much flatter than 893. The improved angle reduces ear loss. Also the 608 auger is a thing of beauty. Will not throw ears out.

Ours built trash piles like crazy in the heat of the day when there was no humidity. Perhaps our rolls were wore out, but still cut fine at night.

My neighbor traded his 10-15 year old 893 a few years back for a 608C. He didn't like it, and after a year traded the 608C for a Drago head. He's ran the Drago for 5-6 years now. I've never asked him what the issues were with the 608C.

Neighbor used to run one 608 and one Geringhoff. Now runs two Geringhoffs.
