Subject: Where have all the meadowlarks gone? (flickers)

East central Iowa

As a kid I spent a lot of time in the fields and pastures of our farm.  I liked to whistle to the meadowlarks and quail.  We still have a lot of birds that come to our birdbath and feeders. The other day while listing the birds I recognized by their call I realized I haven't seen a meadowlark for years.  Have they all disappeared from the earth?  I live in eastern Iowa and most of our fields are corn or soybeans but the Wapsipinicon river and bottoms aren't far.  And not too far from us there are some hills with pastures.

North of London
Few pastures left around here and hay fields are harvested a month or so earlier than they used to be and that has led to a reduction ion Bob-o-links.
Used to be lots and now only see the occasional one around.

On the other hand we now have tree swallows that we never remember seeing before.

Found this little nest the other day with one egg in it.
Yesterday it had 2.
Right on the ground beside the barn foundation.

May spot the bird for identification one of these times.

Highland Center, in Southeast Iowa

I get what you're saying, Kurt, and we're fortunate enough to still have lots of meadowlarks around us out here in the sticks. But a meadowlark and a flicker are not the same bird. A flicker is a member of the woodpecker family.

Still have just about everything here. Meadowlarks, red wing blackbirds, orioles, cardinals, blue jays, and more. I guess they like the dry part of the state!

S.E. Sask.

I was going to comment on that too. Still see and hear a few meadowlarks here in Sask. Flickers are out on the grass in my yard looking for ants quite often. One bird that we didn't use to ever see, but now do, is the turkey vulture. They nest in old buildings on my farm. Great for cleaning up road kill.

Turkey vultures are 'new' here too but they first arrived in the 1980ies.
First ones I saw were when a neighbour spotted them when he was spreading chicken manure which had a few chicken bodies in it.
Asked on the CB what they were and we figured it out.

Now it is not uncommon to see a dozen or more cleaning up dead bodies.

See them regularly patrolling the area looking for dinner but I have never noticed where they nest.

I see a fair number in my hay, pasture, and wheat fields. Not as many as when I was a kid. Bobolinks are what I see a lot less of than even 10 years ago.

ESW ND
We see all those birds on a regular basis. Been having some yellow headed blackbirds hanging around the yard lately. Had to look up what a bobolink was, I guess now I know what they are called. We've had those for awhile. Those flickers sure clean up on ants too. They grab them and eat but also will rub them on their bodies. They come to the bird bath, then once done splashing, they sit on the ground, head cocked and eye's closed staring at the sun. Not sure why, but they do it on a regular basis. The blackbirds are filthy. They nest in the grove about 50yds from the house. They fly over carrying their babies poo and drop it on the house, vehicles and sidewalk. Very messy. They then go to the bath, drink and wash their beak. An oriole snuck in for a quick drink, definitely the male, man oh man, that orange and black is something. Most all the birds are nesting so you don't see them near as often, but it won't be long before the young will need more food and soon leave the nest. Then we will see a lot of them more often.

Farm in WC Iowa
I noticed a male oriole last weekend for the first time on our farm. I got a pic of that guy but missed the two goldfinches I saw right after that.
