southern middle TN | Good afternoon guys. We are building about 3200 feet of new 6 strand fence and would appreciate opinions on the preferred brands of barbwire. Bekeart or StayTuff probably the two options we’re considering. Thanks in advance for any help and have a great day!

Farm in WC Iowa | We use red brand Barb wire with good results. |
|
| |
|
Southern kansas | Always used red brand four barb and considered it to be the best. A while back here on ag talk they trashed the brand and another one was suppose to be better. Don't remember which one that they liked. |

Seems red brand quality has gone down plus OK is cheaper when ordering large quantities.
Never used hi tensile and won’t.
Properly stretched 2 pt, 5 wires, 4-5 6’ steels to 1 pounded 7-8’ 2 3/8, 4 1/2” x 10’ corners
Cheaper than wood, will outlast me... |

| We use Bekaert Gaucho barbwire. |

SE MT | Redbrand only! You'll know the difference in 20 years when the bargain brand wire starts rusting. With with wire you get what you pay for |
|
| |
|
SW OH | If Redbrand was given to me for free I would chuck it in the scrap iron. It will be rusty after a year, loose in a few more, breaking in 5.
Sterling has much better galvanizing. Bought a pallet of Burkhart Gaucho 10+ years ago. Half of it still unused. No rust anywhere. Some of it has been put up and taken down 10 times. Still like new.

| I use RedBrand because that's all that ever local places seems to sell anymore. I know some fence my dad put up in 1993 or so has a few stretches of 4 rotten wires that need to be replaced and the 1 bottom wire that's on it is in great shape and still has noticable red paint on the barbs. Is it still made the same, I don't know the answer, but I think it was definitely the brand to buy in 1993.

north west arkansas | I think bekaert makes that wire also but I could be wrong. We have a plant 10 miles from here and I know several guys that work here. |

| Has anyone used the super gaucho (cattleman pro)? Wanting to try it |
|
| |
|
South Texas | 4pt gaucho, it’s good and sharp, stays tight. I had a guy slip me some stay tuff a few years ago, it’s not as sharp but might be good, ask me in 20 more years. Whatever you do stay away from the cheap OK brand high tensil, it breaks easy, I get that I’m very manly but I should not be able to break it by hand. |

Texas | This one ^^^^^^^^^^^
OK Brand 4-point 12 1/2 guage is the one for me. |
|
| |
|
north west arkansas | I'll have to look but I think that's what my last pallet is we are using on. The barbs will flat butcher you even with good gloves and it seems to be very good wire. |

+1. Sheffield is some of the best too but they are too proud of the name. 2pt OK premium can't be beat. I never have understood anyone wanting to use gaucho. |

Frederick, Md | We have used gaucho in the past and it stays sharp and I don't think any of it has rusted. We are slowly going away from barb to smooth high tensile though. |

S KY | I can understand why some folks don't want to use HT barbed, since the first few years of Goucho were a bit hard to deal with. Those issues have long been resolved, and barbed wire is constantly being improved. There are lots of opinions here, from all across the country. Class I galvanized low carbon is the go to wire in TX and most of OK, because it's dry and has fairly consistent temperatures. Class III HT is the go to wire in places where it stays wet most of the year, and see extreme cold and heat. Although not recent in it's development, 14 gauge HT has just recently become popular as a better alternative to 12 gauge low carbon. Bekaert makes it, Stay Tuff makes it, and Tornado makes it. IMHO, they all three are better than OK, Red Brand, Sheffield, etc, etc. Tornado stretches tighter, faster, easier, and has longer barbs that are tighter spaced. Bekaert started the HT barbed market in the US, and their Cattlemen is no slouch. Stay Tuff does a fine job, as well. Any of the three are excellent choices in my book. Quality is top priority for us on the job, but one mile rolls make my life easier, and there's only one place to get them, so my loyalty is swayed just a bit. One thing is for sure......Red Brand hasn't made anything worth taking to the scrap yard in a dozen years or more. |
|
| |
|
South Dakota | Ok brand has good quality, but they reduce the price by increasing the spacing between barbs, I think they short you half the barbs compared to other brands. |
|
| |
|
southern middle TN | Thanks guys for the opinions. Ended up buying the StayTuff cause the price was right and it is supposed to be good wire. This is the first Stay Tuff on our farm. Be safe out there and have a good day. Thanks to all who replied! |

What do you recommend? |

North Cental Mo. | Ha, I used something different last fall on a recommendation that seems good for now. I'll have to look at a roll in the morning to tell you what it is. Hasn't been in a year, so jury is still out.

Soldiers Grove Wi. 54655 | I've had the total opposite results of Goucho~ We put a lot of it in in the early 80s and every chance i get I tear a bunch out. What a mess! It can't be rolled up like any other wire and once it loosens up it doesn't tighten up again like it should. Looks real nice to start out with but in a few short years it sucks.. Also if it's not pastured around for a year and the grass grows up around it it rusts like crazy also... (did I mention I hate the stuff) lol |

Mine is the same way. Just wait until you try to replace it. Wear leather chaps, shirts, gloves and have a dumpster to put it in... uf-da~ yuk~ |
