NEMO | Have a new to me JD 9400. When running NH3 it runs really good for awhile when you first start out. Once it warms up, 1/2 hour to hour into using it, the tractor cuts out and falls on it's face.
We initially thought fuel issues (at first didn't realize problem seemed to be associated with warm up) so changed filters, drained water, etc. Then JD mechanic thought we had an injector messing up once everything gets warmed up. JD mechanic been into injectors and cups twice now and the problem still not solved.
Hired hand ran 5 or 6 acres yesterday in heat of day and it started acting up. This morning it was cool and slight mist so I ran about 15 acres before it started falling on it's face. Cuts out, lacking power, lacking fuel. You can hardly get the NH3 shut off and tractor stopped in time before it tries to die. Runs rough, cutting out, sometimes fluttering. Once it recovers, sounds good, but try to take off (applicator out of the ground) and it acts up again.
Any ideas or suggestions? Things to look for or try?

ND | Had this happen on a JD 8770 & it was the fuel filter & it took 3 of them, also put new filter on the Dsl tank. Tank filter was the problem here. |

nebraska | We had problems with our 9860 with the 12.5, cups fixed it for a while then the final fix was the complete fuel filter housing with the valves in them,, not saying that's your problem because we never lost that much power that it would die, only lost enough that it would set codes all the time,, |

| Had a similar problem with a jd 2940. Turned out there was a old piece of shirt in the fuel tank. It would run perfect after sitting still for a while because the shirt would float to the top. After running the tractor for 10 to 15 minutes, the fuel pump would "suck" the shirt to the bottom of the fuel tank and plug the hole that supplies the fuel to the pump. After changing filters multiple times, draining tank putting in new fuel etc, finally took it to the dealer. I found out what the problem was. It was an expensive lesson. Dealer removed the piece of shirt from the tank and have never had a problem since. Talk about a frustrating experience.
It doesn't take much to plug the hole in the bottom of the tank that feeds the fuel pump. |

Central Illinois | This week our 9200 had filter issues. ECU 57 code was coming up. I changed the 2 fuel filters and that seamed to take care of it for a couple days then the code would come on. I changed the fuel strainer which is in the fuel line just below the first filter housing. Before I put the new strainer on I had the air hose and blew the fuel back into the tank. It appeared to have more flow after clearing the line. Yesterday I ran the tractor for 2 hours without any code.
A year ago I did have the fuel pump on the back of the head go out, it was causing the low fuel pressure.
Keep us posted on the fix.

Emporia, KS | Be careful, we had a 9200 one time that pitted a piston. We overhauled the engine and put in reman injectors. The head was completely rebuilt with new injector cups. The first time we took it out the tractor was running great. Then all of the sudden started stumbling over itself and wouldn't stop. You would shut it off and start it back up and everything would be great. Then randomly would pull down and start stumbling over itself again. JD came back out and cursed the reman injectors saying we should have put in new. They replaced the injector harness because there was some discrepancies with the resistance. Come to find out the ECU was bad. When the engine hit a certain RPM and load it would fumble. They had to replace the ECU, which was no longer available with the new style and they had to get a harness adapter. All in all it was a $6500 bill. But it ran great after that. We replace injectors and cups every 3k hrs whether it is needed or not. 12.5l is a beast of a motor, but it's very high maintenance. |

SE SD | Not familiar with a 9400 but it does sound l8ke a bad lift pump if it has one to me.
They start out strong when cool then fall flat when they get hot.
If it does have one check the flow when cool then check again when acting up. |

NE ND | I vote for strainer in bottom of fuel tank. I had a 9320 acting just like this. When I finally drained both tanks and took the strainer out I couldn't believe the tractor could have run for two minutes! Just a ball of slime down there. |

WCIL | Our 9430 has had the screen plug too. If you run the fuel level down a ways, you can duct tape a shop vac to the filler neck and remove the screen with only a half pint or less fuel coming out. Really need two people in case of failure you can put your thumb in the hole, and have to watch the plastic tanks sucking in too much. Saw mechanic do it, so now we clean ours regularly.
