Question about the IH 886? Where there a lot of this model made as to the 986 and 1086 ? It seem there not as many of these as the larger 86 series model. Looking at one now with a IH loader 2350 model. Not the easiest shifting tractor, I also considering it age also. Serial number plate very stratch up, so hard to read. Has a cab, engine clean no oil leaks on it I can see. Thinking a hay baling tractor with the cab, AC 134A now. Want some thoughts on this tractor when new and those that got one or used one.

North Central Iowa | Lot of times that serial plate in cab gets scratched up, but that is jus cab serial #. Tractor serial plate is below that side of cab, on housing near hydraulic filter cover. Not sure on numbers, but there wasn't as many produced, and not many 886's around in our area either. Love, hate tractor, (86 series) lol. But you can be shifting with left hand as you are running hyd levers with right hand.

NW Central Ohio | ...those tractors were all hard shifting. If the T/A has a guarantee for a year...and you're an IH man at heart...you'll be happy with it. Unless you have to go back and forth trying to scoop manure. You'll get a sore arm shifting.

New London, Wisconsin | When I sold them new back in the day they were very popular and we sold nearly as many 886's as we did 1086's. Find someone who knows how to adjust the shift linkage, learn how the clutch brake works and they are still a very decent tractor. I have used them as a loader tractor and it worked well for me. On the clutch, if you push it all the way to the floor, it engages the small brake inside the transmission, and that slows the spinning gears for smooth shifting. It works fine when properly adjusted and properly used. IH did not do a very good job of teaching customers how to do that. I finally learned about it when customers began to complain about the shifting and our shop taught me how it was designed to work. Jim

S.E. South Dakota | Dad had one. Good tractor, pulled the six row planter for years. We used it has a second plow tractor pulling 4-14s. I always thought it shift a lot better then our 1486. Ours had a american engine and would out pull uncles 886 with a German engine.

Where the difference engines a split in the production of the tractor? One engine early production and other the late production? Which engine is a better engine, or is it a draw? Glad to know about the clutch. If you spray lubricant on the shifter part on your left side would that help or attract dirt? The transmission is a 8 speed, the TA been remove few years ago, is that a plus ? Thanks for the answers and responses.
