Subject: JD 9600 questions

Morris, IL
So my new to me 9600 showed up this week have few questions about it. It is a late 1997 with 3k engine hours, like new tires all around, has like new kuchar concave in it and crazy good service records. Got it washed and waxed last couple days, it came from a great home and really shines like our 7720 does.

1. This machine has large Maurer hopper extension and Maurer extended fountain auger that is about 1” from fitting in our shop door. Wondering if anyone has ideas how I could shorten it up a bit or put some sort of electric folding system on it? Are these fountain auger extensions common? Never seen one before sure looks like will be nice in the field but it is really up there 15’ tall. Just a huge bin extension, monster with tip ups I think they are called.

2. What have others done as far as HID lighting? Was looking a bit today was thinking maybe the 4 outside on cab roof and the stubble lights. I didn’t know if switching the center lights to HID would be too much for road travel? When do those light in grain tank pointing outward turn on? Would adding backup light like 9610 has be worth it?

3. This machine has lot of 9610 upgrades and kuchar parts that were similar to 9610 upgrades. Hour meter has 2x read outs with concave readout, kuchar fan shield, kuchar concave inserts to pull air up feederhouse, but it doesn’t have the sundial shoe adjusters. I have them on 7720 are really nice setup. Has anyone put them in 9x00 are they worth updating?

4. Will be running a 930F and a 893 with it. 893 has calmer chopping knife rolls. Wondering how the reverser will like this setup? Can anything be done to keep it cool or will I be OK? I have heard of adding cooler under feederhouse should I consider that? Anything else that can be done, we always ran JD synthetic in ours on 7720 and changed it every year never smelt burnt but didn’t look great and that was just a 6 row.

I’m sure I will have more when I start looking more at the guts of this machine and have it inspected by our JD guy. Overall impressed it is huge machine when comparing to 7720. Seems like will be easier to work one seems less congested all in one area like 7720 was. I like all the spring loaded chain idlers. Seems like cab is kind of smaller then I was expecting, not as much leg room as 7720. Thanks in advance.

We did the same swap, 7720 to a 9600. You’ll not believe the increased capacity, both in the cleaning area and the grain tank.

Can’t help on the fountain auger, but we did update the lights to LED and really like the extra light. We added rear facing lights for the chopper and really enjoy being able to see backing up in the dark. The side lights are for counting point rows, they turn on with the turn signal when you have your field lights on.

Ours has several updates as well, including the dual readout corner post, and feederhouse dust fan. We also updated to the sun dial shoe adjusters and formus it makes fine tuning easier.

We run a 630f with no reverser issues, and being that it’s Calmer rollsmknstead of a full chopping head I imagine you shouldn’t have issues, they were made to handle 12 row corn heads so I wouldn’t be too worried.

There are several different greasing charts when looking at the book compared to the charts on the machine, so make sure you work through both when greasing for the first time.

Can’t think of anything else at this point, but I’m sure others will chime in. You’ll think you’ve died and gone to heaven running it this fall (assuming it ever warms up and stops raining)

Not the same but lots of similarities... I had a 9410. Loved it by the way. The folding auger was common on mine. Just had to jump up there and fold it down with hopper before going in shed. The side lights operate off blinker lever. When your feild lights are on they will work. Of course great for unloading. Mine had rear chopper lights. Factory ran off feild light switch. I really like them. The 10series updates are great. If it doesn’t have the sundial shoe adjusters I would add them. Very precise and easy to duplicate settings. Cab might seem smaller but you will love it. Working on the engine and sides is soooo much better. Good luck.

Go with LED lights on all 6 on top of cab, lights up like a stadium at night then, neighbors have said mine looks like a spaceship at night from a mile or so away.
Your going to want a feederhouse fan, I put the GVL one on my 9600, drives off the feederhouse chain on right side, so no hydraulic or electric drive issues, very simple and works great.
I also run 893 with calmer choppers, reverser box doesn't seem to run any hotter then regular head, I do not have the auxiliary cooler, just run a good synthetic oil and change yearly and should be fine.
You will also want the rear facing lights, helps to keep an eye on chopper and chaff spreader at night and manuevering.

1. Not sure on and electric folding system on the fill auger, but one option would be to remove the tip-ups and then shorten the fill auger to the original height. Another option would be to shorten the fill auger up and then get a separate auger to push the grain up to fill the tank which looks like it could be made to fold electrically with without much trouble. https://www.demco-products.com/agricultural-products/augers-and-exte...

Also, there used to be someone who made a cross auger to help fill the extension that didn't extend above the tank extension. I thought it was Crary, but I couldn't find it on their website.

Keep in mind though, I think you have the best option for filling that extension with the extended auger. It is simple and works great!

2. I've never done any light upgrades, so I can't help you out there. The side lights come on with the turn signal lever when the headlights are on, but when the blinkers are on, the same lever is the turn signal. Yes, I would definitely add the rear facing lights because it's nice for backing in the dark and seeing the straw coming out of the chopper in the dark.

3. Up to you if you want to do the sundial upgrade. I think it's a great upgrade and maybe you could do it when the sieve wires wear out or just do it now.

4. I think you're on the right track with the reverser. Make sure to run the synthetic reverser oil in it and certainly adding the cooler would help as well. I don't know how hard those rolls pull, but in my experience any help to cool the reverser adds life to it. There used to be a kit to install a reverser cooler onto those combines, probably still available.

Another thing, keep an eye on those two bearings on the unloading auger drive...the short shaft with the large double pulley and the small drive sprocket...those bearings can go out and then the shaft can wiggle over and cut a nice awful round hole on the side panel of the combine. Also, keep good oil in the primary countershaft gear case (behind the cab near the cab door) because it also runs pretty warm and should have good oil in it. I run the same expensive synthetic reverser oil in my 9770, but that might be overkill.

I thought the leg room was as good as a 20 series, but it's been a while since I've been in a 20 series for me. Is your seat in the 9600 moved back all the way?

BTW, that is a very nice looking 9600!

I would shorten the Mauer auger extension

not sure it need to be that long to fill the extension nicely

not sure what the cables are for either, they would be gone

Lights have come a long way in past 10 years, I was convinced HID's were the only way, I run four center two ( couldn't care less about traffic )

and outside 2

HID's are a lot of load but cheap for the light they put out

Replaced all other light fixtures with 3x5 speaker ovals and 880 HID bulbs

leg room ? must be really tall

Very sharp 9600! I ran a 6620 for 16 years and a 7720 Titan II for 6 years and then traded up to a 9510, I'm betting that after you run the 0600 you will send the 7720 down the road!

Subject: RE: JD 9600 questions

I would personally remove the tipups and make the auger back to standard length. You have a lot of capacity and weight up there with just the extensions. Advertised close to 350 bu. without the tipups. Coming from your 7720 that will be a big improvement. If you plan on keeping it a long time like the old one I think that would also help longevity to remove the tipups.

Put LED lights in all but the road positions. They are so bright they can really blind other drivers on the road at night. And you can aim the four you put in to really reach out in the field. Put LED’s in the aux lights near the cab entry platform level. Tie the rear corner LED’s into those with a relay and you don’t have to run any wires into the cab.

Should be no problem running the 893. Change reverser oil yearly with good synthetic. Also change the oil in the gearbox behind cab. Run synthetic there also. That box takes all the power to run the threshing and separating. Make sure the big nut stays tight on the elctromagnetic clutch shaft. Grease the slip clutch on the conveyor auger drive shaft (inside right front tire below feederhouse).

If it has the aluminum block on the walker cranks grease them daily!

Sharp looking machine.
9600 cab is 100x more comfortable than the older 20 series. I went from a 6620 to a 9500. I put the Maurer bin extention on mine and when it’s full there’s a lot of weight up there. I would definitely remove the smaller top extensions.
I’m sure you know this already but if you’re not doing small grains, take your filler plates out. You will gain some power and capacity. That thing will eat corn.
Again, very nice looking machine.

sw corner ia.
I replaced the bulbs in all 6 fronts with 55 watt hid's. I also made new mounts that moved the lights forward out of that stupid plastic shroud then built an aluminum shade to go under them all so no light will shine on the windshield. this is an awesome fix. it is also right at the limit of what the light breaker can handle.

I have led lights on the front of my haul tractor and when I am next to it at night you cannot tell the leds are even on. got the combine light bulb kit from hid nation, was very inexpensive. I had to buff out the lenses so they were clear again. I do notice a lot of radio interference from these ballasts.

sundials are a good upgrade over stock. makes it much easier to get it all the same.

guy who had my 9500 used a 12r 15" head on it with no problems so I imagine your reverser will be ok.

I don't know anyone selling a power fold kit for the fountain auger but it would be nice.

Take that auger extension off and leave your tip tops on...you don't have to fill it full every time, but sure is nice if you need the space.
Grease everything way more than the book says.
FYI~Your hours are not going to show original time if the tach has been changed to dual display...

Yes the hours are 33xx I rounded. The hour meter has been changed but being this is a 97 I think it was changed after the first year. There is a sticker stating hours when changed I think it says 330.

Kind of my thought on extension leave it but don’t use it to full capacity, previous owner said same about not using it but was sure nice in his hills to not run over so easy.

Thanks everyone.

Add an oil cooler to the reverser, it should definitely have one for anything bigger than a six row head. Especially if you are planning on having it a while.

Agreed. Nice looking 9600. have owned a '93 model since 2000. never added anything to it. stock lights, no bin extension, etc. Just a good machine for an 8row head and 25 to 30 ft platform. other than routine maintenance the two areas I would watch have both to do with walkers. the first is the alloy walker bearings as mentioned previously grease them everyday and grease them full. Or you might consider replacing them with the old wood style blocks--think they are about $40 or so each. the other item is the straw walker drive gearbox. make sure that it stays tight on the straw walker shaft, if it gets loose it will eat the end of the shaft. I would also drain the gear oil from that gearbox, put a grease zerk on it, and fill it JD cornhead grease.
There are a few other things to watch for like the tin under the bin cross augers getting thin-may need liners installed. the tin under the feederhouse wearing thin-need replacement or patched. Lots of wear items on combine as the hours add up. Good luck.

Ty,

My 9600s were equipped almost identical to yours when I bot them, but yours is in much better shape.

1. I removed the vertical extensions from the Maurers, and went back to the standard bin fill auger. I considered the Maurers with the vertical extensions to be overkill, and FWIW, we have failed 3 of the original 8 driver rims that came on the two combines. But I farm in a yield-resistant semi-desert, so I don't need as much bin capacity for an acceptable range (1 mile, IMO).

2. I really like the Larsen LEDs I put on last fall. Plug and play, in the original socket. They make the OEM lights seem pathetic.

4. I'll second the synthetic oil in the reverser (get the thick synthetic JD stuff in the black rectangular plastic bottle). The best thing I did for my reversers was to make little "hats" to cover the dipstick tube. We kept getting water in them, even though we shed off season. A short chunk of PVC pipe and a cap stopped that problem in its tracks. We change the oil annually (about 300 hours), and since we put the hats on the oil comes out looking new.

One of mine came with a cooler on the reverser. I took it off. Between the extra hoses and the little chain-driven pump on the RH side of the feeder house, I thought it created more modes of failure than it was worth. I DID have one of my reversers fail, but I don't know whether it was the one that originally came with the cooler or not. I also have an 893 for those years when I lose my sanity and try to grow corn. In my experience, I think a 28' Shelbourne in 60 bushel wheat requires more grunt than a non-chopper 893 in 120 bushel corn.

Regards.

MDS

Edit: On mine, there's a "Warranty zerk" at the RH end of of the stub shaft that drives off the front of the engine. The zerk clears the fan by about 1/4 inch, until the bearing support bracket fatigues...then it hits the fan.

for the gear box get the cooler kit. the ones we put in had a little pump driven off the belt on the left side. easy to install.

there was an upgraded spring and belt for the guys running 12 row and knife rolls. talk to the big combine dealers like out of elbow lake Mn. they will get you in the right direction. start with service then get to parts.

behind the cab is a gear box. give the steel that its mounted to a good look for cracks.

the shaft coming out of that gear box going behind the cab to the other side sometimes has a plastic tube over it. potential fire hazard. lots of them tubes were removed as the combine was being worked on.

On our 96’ model the wire harness was already there to put the extra lights out the front. If I remember there’s a knock out up by the radio that you can get a switch to put in and it plugs into the harness and the other ends are under cab to mount the lights on either side of the cab like the 10’ series. I tied into that to run power back to the rear lights I installed.I see yours already has the front lights.

About the 2nd day I ran mine that gearbox shelled and put oil in that tube. Could smell the smoke but not see the fire. My engine fan drive shelled at the same time. We got that fixed we started combine, engaged machine, engine died. My gear case was so locked up it killed the engine.

Only one issue I can input opinion. I have 893 with Calmers, worked fine on 9600 but local JD techs recommended the reverser cooler, and also to leave that left hand feeder house shield off when doing corn. Don't know if that's why, but I did both things and never had trouble or overheated reverser. Great looking combine you have!

I would take off that big hopper topper-have seen a few busted down ones & its not pretty with the tire going vertical straight up & damaging a lot. Maybe the STS machines are heavier to cope with this.
