Looking at a mx 240 one owner with 3500 hours. What do I need to look for and what can I expect for issues down the road. I have heard they are not the most reliable tractor

Central Ontario
CAPS injection pumps are a common failure.
Some early models seemed to have electrical issues (a lot of fault codes)

There will be some people with horror stories about this series of tractors, and they did have their share of gremlins especially in the early days. We’ve basically found though that CIH came with revisions of the components that had a high failure rate and the problems were cured. Have one here with 8,000 hours now and it just runs and causes us very little trouble now. A good MX is a better buy than boxcar Magnums these days.

Also looking at a 2006 275 with 2800 hours but it is double the money. Is it worth it tho?

I haven't had an MX YET............But my next one won't be a boxcar! The tractor for the money is hard to be on an MX.

We have a 2001 MX240 that we bought with around 400 hours on it. It now has over 8000 hours. It’s been an extremely reliable tractor for us. However, we were always told to stay away from the ‘99 MX tractors. I don’t know why, though.

We have a 1999 MX200 and it has been the most reliable tractor I've ever been around. Bought it with 800 hours on it and it now has ~4500 with nothing but minor repairs. I wouldn't be afraid of a '99 model.

Complaint I always hear about is the CAPS pump. It was a big enough problem that there’s kits out there to convert the tractor to a mechanical pump.

Apart from the CAPS pump, MX tractors with S.N. before 105000 had electrical trouble and also different aux. hydraulic outlets. If an early one fails you need to buy a whole new outlet, the newer ones just the solenoid...
We have an MX220 that has had the spiders of the drive shaft between engine and transmission wear out in the middle of planting season. Wasn't happy with that one. Other than that I prefer the MX a thousand times over my boxcars. Much more comfortable. Apart from the A.C...

Had a boxcar, thought it was over-rated..............For the same money or tad more could have bought an MX, had better cab and more important to me better turning radius. To me that is a no-brainer.

MX (and 8000 JD) have better built in weight distribution than earlier MFD tractors too, they are superior at putting power to the ground.

1999 was the 1st year for MX series and I was always told do not buy 1st year of a new series of any tractor. What do I have? A 1999 MX240. I have been pretty happy with this tractor. Think I bought it with 3500 hours on it and have 6300 hours on it. I had some sensors go bad, but were replaced with an upgraded part number. Several years ago, before I had CAPS pump issues, I installed a P-pump conversion from Area Diesel. U-joints on engine to tranny driveshaft have been replaced a couple of times. I have had minor SCV issues, either with solenoids on the SCV plates below rear window or switch in armrest. Overall, I have been really happy with this tractor. I had a 7120 MFD before this.

What was wrong with reverse on your 240 a few weeks ago?

Thank you for the responses. I think it might be worth a shot to try the 99. Can’t seem to justify an 06 at double the money at this time.

Edit to add. The previous owner is known to be pretty meticulous so that makes a difference as well

Thanks again fellas

Cliff, ended up pulling cab, splitting tractor and replacing reverse clutch pack. While they were in there, odd and even clutch packs were replaced and master clutch pack and clutch hub was updated. Almost 6400 hours on the tractor, so maybe it was due. I was hoping it was an external issue, but that was not the case. Better to find out when I did, rather than two weeks from now.

I was told to keep fresh filters on the CAPS pump tractors. Make sure the inline filter below the air cleaner gets replaced, as well as the spin-on filter.
