Subject: John Deere 4440 hydraulic pump leak question

I was hooking up the 4440 to the planter and noticed the seal around the shaft that runs from the harmonic balancer to the hydraulic pump was leaking on the hydraulic pump. I read that you have to pull the pump off the fix it but that is the only spot leaking. I also saw that you have to pull the fuel tank and radiator to get the pump off. Does anyone have any tricks or tips that might be easier?

Thanks

Between Omaha and Des Moines, 7 miles South of I80

You might want to check the little plastic, oil drain line on right framerail side for kinks, first. (#15 in picture)

I believe its job is to relieve oil pressure from that seal area.

Hopefully some actual JD mechanics will chime in and comment, too.

I dont know if the 40 series is different but I pulled the pump off the 4430 without removing either, just the plates that cover the pump. How many hours on the 44?

Thank you. I looked and there wasn't any kinks in the line.

Ok I will look at see if I think I can get it out without pulling anything off. It has 7,013 hours on it.

Thanks for the info.

Pulling the radiator is the easiest way to get the pump out. You don't have to pull the tank or split the front end off. Take the pump mount loose from the pump & engine both, drop it out the bottom, & that gives room for the pump to come out. There is a tool to change the seal in place, but with 7K hours the quad ring inside the seal is probably leaking, & the shaft may have a groove worn where the seals run...just time to kit the pump.

There are plates on top and bottom to remove and yes take the mounting bracket off from the bottom and remove the lines. Tilt the pump and remove it out the top. I agree if the seal is leaking it more than likely has an issue with the shaft. A complete rebuild takes special tools to set the pressure valve, and insert the valves under the pistons. I had to replace the crankshaft, pistons, seals, bearings and valves, along with shimming the bearings. I could have bought a reman but this was cheaper and I learned how to rebuild them. If the dealer would have rebuilt it a reman is lots cheaper, make sure its the big pump if you buy one.
