SW NE | This afternoon I replaced one of the drive axle seals on one of our T660s. This particular truck has the Stemco Pro-Torq spacer (between the bearings) and Nut. In the past, we've set the bearings just by feel. This time I decided to use the sequence from the Stemco instructions. After doing the sequence, the hub seemed awfully tight. When I would spin the hub, it would stop immediately. Wondering if this snugness is actually ok? Maybe we've been setting the hubs way too loose in the past? Any advice would be appreciated...

South Western Michigan | Stemco "pro torque" is a nut. Are you sure the bearing spacer is not "con-met"? If it is then Google they're website. The spindle nut will be torqued to a straight 300 or 500 lbs/ft depending on the hub and spindle specs. There is no back off and retorque sequence with these internal spacers. That is the purpose of the spacer, to set the "pre load".

South Western Michigan | Also if the hub is that tight you have an issue. Inner ring of old seal still on axle or bearing issue.

You Tube has some videos on the subject. I know what can happen when they are too tight. I had a wheel seal replaced in Fremont and the professional torqued it by the book. It ran hot enough to melt the plastic window on the outer seal. I took it back and they replace the seals and bearings. When I got home I had my mechanic do it again. He does it by feel and I've never had a problem with any of the work he's done. If you have any doubts watch the temperature with an IR gun and compare the temperatures to the rest the wheels. IR guns are cheap enough now that everyone should have one. Edited by nwokman 3/17/2018 14:40

SW. IOWA | You probably need to put in a new spacer. The old one is probably wore but you can't see it.

My Kenworth has what is called the Spicer LMS series aluminum hubs. They have the spacer between the bearing cones as well. Above posted mentioned the spacer may be wore, and it's probably true. It wouldn't have to be wore very much, and if the nuts are re-torqued, it would be too tight. See if this link opens. http://media.spicerparts.com/cfs/files/media/PRWdjYaX3BNd7bwDt/abib... If not, google Dana Spicer LMS hub installation. I personally do not care for the set up. But it seems to work.
