Subject: 580 Case 4 stick backhoe controls

NW Ohio
I am going to look at a 580L backhoe that has the 4 stick controls. I have only ever ran a 2 stick. Is it hard to learn a 4 stick or can they be switched over to a 2 stick? I have ran a 2 stick that had what I think are called E controls. That was very nice and would be a nice option if the 580 could be updated to that style.
Thanks for the help.

I think the 2 stick is much nicer, that being said I have only run the 4 stick and you get the hang of it pretty quickly then it does not seem to matter.

You can get used to it pretty easily. A week or two.

It can be switched. We had the dealer we bought ours switch it for us and swap parts with another machine he had. The valving is the same, just the controls are different.

My preference is still wobble stick, not 4 stick with swing pedals.

I am more precise with wobble sticks, but I can switch between the two easily. The one that gets me is the extandahoe lever should be on the right for me, because I am left handed, a constant nuisance I had.

Call Joe Welch Equipment in Calendonia MN, they may have parts off a machine to do the swap or be able to help you, at least tell you what you would need.

Just switch it. You will be happier in the long run. The valve stack body is right under the controls, I think there is a pan in the floor board that you can remove and have access to change the linkages.

Have a 4 stick on an old Ford hoe and get along just fine. If you are anywhat of a "catch on" type of guy, you'll be fine in no time. I always credited my abuility to drive my pulling tractor easily because of my natural instinct of what to do without thinking about it and letting my hands just do it......... same thing running a 4 stick ( or other pieces of equipment) ----- you either have the knack or you don't LOL. I know a lot of good hard working "people" but when it comes to being an "operator" they may as well go home LOL.

Personally like the 2 stick JD better . 2 stick are either JD or Cat style . 4 stick foot swing I think were called CASE controls .

They can be switched over. I ran a two stick about four years ago for about five minutes and wanted a four stick machine. first and only time I ran a two stick.

I have a two stick control on mine and every time I get on it I look like I haven't run a backhoe in my life. It takes me a while to get back in the saddle and not looking like a beginner.
