Can we see your pickups you use to keep your operation going? -flatbeds, service bodies, regular beds, I don't care. I need some ideas on how to make the most of my space with a couple boxes, air compressor, and fuel tank. Thanks!

Kind of upset with myself I don't have any pics of my truck its always a work in progress trying to make it handier. Regular cab, 9ft dually utility box, space fills up pretty quick, wish is was 10ft box. My suggestion put everything you can on a skid, welder/generator, compressor skid or mounted on top of the box, things change as the season goes on its nice to be able to have some adaptability to your rig.

edit found pic, need to make a fuel tank for the bed yet, would like a gas compressor on the top of the bed, find a auto-crane to mount on it, get rid of the bumper and raise it to the height of the bed to make it higher like a work bench. But its got a 6.5 in it that will probably need a Duramax or Cummins conversion first & I'm just a STO, its a 2002 3500hd with the 15,000lb GVWR

Nothing fancy. 93 gmc 3/4 ton, probably the cheapest series of pickup to buy parts for that has a 1/2 decent cab. 215 gallon service tank followed by a crossbox then a air compressor behind that with another tool box behind the wheel wells. Most of our fields are close to home so I don’t worry much about bringing loads of parts with. If I had a flatbed I don’t think I would carry much more then what I do now. If I need to weld on something it always comes to the shop

Ram 3500 w/5.7L hemi. 9' utility box. Front of the box has 100 gallon transfer tank, behind that is my Ranger 8 and Northern Tool air compressor. Between them is a plastic box with the welding leads curled up inside and the aux. battery to power both of them as well as the fuel pump. Aux. battery is on a battery isolator so gets charged from the pickup's alternator. That leaves about 3' of bed for hauling stuff. Utility box has hand tools, electric drill and grinder, hyd. jacks, seasonal parts, air hoses, and fluids such as hyd. and engine oil, grease, etc.

Mine is a 2013 F-350 with 9' utility bed, 6.7 powerstroke, and auto. (it replaced a 1997 F350) It had previously been a truck for a tower maintenance company.
I keep coming up with some changes, have air compressor and torch in the back (would like to add welder/generator, but not there yet)
multiple tools, jacks, etc. also have a truck mounted inverter so I can use a grinder, drill etc.
I have a separate fuel tender on a trailer so I don't have to haul a fuel tank.
I had planned on removing the ladder racks, but they have been handy for having to move longer items.

good luck

My dad has a 2008 with service box. Has a Miller Bobcat welder and an air compressor. My truck is a 2001 with a flatbed that I put toolboxes on. Both have their pros and cons. I have a gooseneck ball, but with the toolboxes I can't utilize it. Service box is nicer for tools. It all just depends on what you want to do with it

If you are having 6.5L issues, feel free to email me. That thing should get out of its own way pretty easily with no trailer, and 2002 is a good year.

I think the 6.5 is okay in a light duty situation, It does ok 4.56 gears, 90,000 miles wish I had the NV4500 instead of the 4l80e, it was night and day once I cut the covered utility bed/bird catcher down to just a utility bed, I hope it lasts so I don't have to do anything to it, just thinking long term I really like this truck and like tinkering on projects so just a wish list engine item. Maybe a wrecked 4wd LBZ drivetrain and put a Dana 70 up front.

I think I remember you from when we broke off from the dieselplace when that went all to hell. You know your stuff.

Thought I had some pics but I don't .  '01 F 450 crew cab 4x4 7.3L.  Has a tool bed on it.  I thing in between it's 11'x about 4' .  Only reason we bought it was it was dirt cheap and only had 80,000 miles on it a couple years ago.  It belonged to a lease company, case IH leased it and the company didn't want it back, so they sold it for a little more than the taxes on it.  Didn't think we really needed a tool truck, but the thing has already paid for itself saving trips back to the shop for tools.  It's also nice since theirs 6 of us, we can at least haul 5 to the field in it if we need too.  We haven't put a compressor or anything like that in it yet, may just get a roll around to put in it, we only need it  a couple months in the spring and a few in the fall, then it would only be occasional since the battery tools are pretty powerful now.

I have an 06 reg cab 4x4 f450 6.0 with 11ft bed. I bought it with the bed and 250gal diesel tank for $6700. I put triple c tool boxes on both sides at the rear of the bed I love these boxes I can fit lots of tools in them and still pull a gooseneck no problem they are actually made to go across the bed at the front of trucks but work very well this way also. I also have a montezoma box on the drivers side beside the fuel tank. air compressor. 60gal water tank on top of diesel tank which is very handy as well. I really like the way this truck is set up it is extremely handy on the farm. I’ll try to take more pics tomorrow

This is a few pics of mine from several years ago. I have fine tuned a few things, though it's an even worse mess right now.

It has been the toolbox for the new shop until I can get my box in there. On the passengers side in front of the box viewed, I have a cheap TSC under body box I turned on its side to hold my welding supplies and cables, then forward of that is my Airco welder/air compressor. The tank below the bed on the driver's side is the air tank for the compressor.

If you want more recent pics, let me know and I'll Ike some this afternoon.

Does it smoke at all or trip the SES light? I am concerned there is an issue with the vacuum controlled turbo wastegate controller, and you are essentially running around naturally aspirated.

That is not a fun time for anyone. :)

The early to middle aged 6.5Ls were only 385 lb/ft, yours should be 430 lb/ft, so it should scoot half decently.

Slick truck, thanks for sharing. Are those both air hoses on your reels? 3/8" and 1/2" I'm guessing? or is the black hose hooked up to your water tank?

It does all 6.5 things well in a 6.5 way, except it dies intermitly PMD has been relocated albeit to the inner fender I know not the best place for it have a new PMD just have to install it, biggest issue is driveability the 98 I had with 4.10s the GM-8 turbo showed how pathetically short legged it is, with 4.63 gears it's ten fold worse, should put a hx-40 on it, but then I need to add an air to air, then program it & I stuck a bunch of money into something that is still a 6.5 at the end of the day, not sure a swap isn't cheaper.

check out www.quadstartuning.com or www.leroydiesel.com

For no more fuel than a 6.5L runs, no need to intercool it, the change to a bigger turbo is improvement enough.

The good thing is with an automatic, you can even go with a big turbo and dont really need to tune it, the auto will keep the big turbo spooled easier on stock fuel than with a NV4500.

4.63s are not all bad, with the tall 19.5 rubber the final drive ratio is still faster than 16 inchers and 4.10s.

‘94 KW, 3406 Cat & 18spd... bought it 3 years ago. 10k lbs 20 foot crane, added miller welder, air compressor, 250 gal water shuttle (w/6gpm pump), hyd hose crimper, misc bolts and parts, tools/tools and tools. Have a dedicated compartment for seasonal parts. Pulls my fuel trailer when I need to, it has its own air compressor and air pump for fuel, also carrier 60 gal of hyd oil with another air driven pump.

Wont I need tuning to keep it from derating? I seem to remember having issues with my 98 defueling hard when I put a homemade turbo master on it even with the potentiometer on it. While were on the topic of 3500hd I got re-caps on the rear that shake the truck apart at 60+ & need to go, can I fit 245's under it?

Your welcome, it a very handy truck much handier than the single axle international truck that I used to have. One hose is for air the other is hooked up to water. Air is 3/8 and water is 1/2. I love being able to pull a gooseneck with it the f450 has low gears and pulls trailers quite well. If you have any other questions I’d be glad to help

Here's the one I run at work. I need to do a couple things yet. Need to get my vise mounted on or in the bumper and reorganize a couple cabinets. Also want to move the cordless chargers to drivers side with all the cordless tools. I made a short (about 15 ft.) pair of welding leads, best thing I did so far. So much handier than dragging the whole 100 foot pair out multiple times a day for a minute weld job. I also want to flip the ladder around, walked into it today and wasn't too happy.

Never did it. Never seen it done. But I've always wondered if it would not be a good idea to have a service trailer instead of a service truck. Most farms have multiple pickups, trucks, tractors, etc. Why not put all that service stuff on a trailer that could be pulled with whatever was handy at the time? Maybe someone has tried this and it didn't work?

There are some service trailers around... my biggest issue would be, if it wasn’t hooked to a truck, it may walk off pretty easy.

My service truck goes with me daily (it doesn’t spend the night out in the field).

X2, I agree. theft would be the only concern, but if a person used a gooseneck and took the coupler with them at night it would make it pretty hard to steal.

One could also start with a pickup chassis with the service body on it and run a driveline from the rear end up into a locked toolbox and have a way to lock the driveshaft. One could even have a belt pulley on said driveline to run an alternator to charge on board batteries too. :)
