Steering can have issues and I think the transmission couldn’t hold up to the 4890’s and 94’s. Or maybe the engine couldn’t handle the HP. I think the 4494’s were the only ones without much for issues, seems like every other model except the Cummins powered 4994’s had some form of issue.

Kind of had a bad reputation from earlier models. Steering sensors were an issue at times.
I had a 4694 for a few years. Decent tractor. Lighter weight than some 4 wheel drives but pulled well. Being able to switch from 2 wheel to 4 wheel steering was a plus. Also, it was a solid frame tractor so no hinge and u-joints. It did have u-joints on the axles.
They were kind of expensive to repair and there are not a lot of mechanics left who know how to work on them.

They would be a great Tractor if they bent in the middle. As a former owner of one the steering is worthless. Otherwise great.

In our area the steering was what made them popular. They really hugged the hills where the articulated tractors wouldn't even begin to hold a line because half the tractor always wanted to go down the hill. They were extremely responsive when on 4 wheel steering.

I wasn't really interested in one but for the price I saw seemed like a cheap cart tractor.

I had the same idea. Would someday like a big square baler, should handle one fine in addition to grain cart.

They were Scania V8.  I have a friend who swapped out the engine in their 4994 for a 855 Cummins.  They used it for a year then traded it for a JD 9420.

not cool to be driving one close to a big ditch when the steering sensor would get messed up

guy went in the ditch one day, on the way home from the tractor hospital, after getting the steering

worked on

Even our Case dealer who sold us our 4490 told me later that those were one of the worst tractors ever made.

The one good thing I remember about them was the ledge behind the seat was a great place for kids.

The 4994 was the problematic one. Case needed a 400 horse tractor but didn't have time to develop the drivetrain so the put a 400 horse engine in place of the 300 horse the 4894 had. Just did not work out too well.

Halfway through production they went from the Scania to the 855.

Case's 70 series full hydraulic steering system was better. Sometimes when manufacturers move towards purely customer driven requests like Case did with these tractors steering, they are not necessarily better long-term.
The farm economy was far different in terms of cash flow, so bashing the quality of these tractors with today's standards in mind is actually pretty inconsiderate of the folks who designed and assembled them, not to mention those of us who couldnt afford to run anything else.
In our neck of the woods, landlords expected you to plow corn stalks, or the landlords didn't rent to you. Compared to plowing with a 2wd tractor, the 4wd Cases were a real game changer for both durability and productivity. By productivity, I mean that you used about 1 more bottom on the plow than your biggest 2wd, but drove 50+% faster. Our Case 4wd was the first factory cab tractor on the farm, and that was 40 years ago. 2wd tractors subsequently lasted a lot longer not dragging a plow for 1/2 of their annual hours at 3mph.

Remember too that there are a rigid frame models after the mergers of Case/IH/Steiger. Models 9240 and 9260. So even when the first boxcar Magnums were being built there was still a new market for the rigid frame design with some more updates.

I thought the 4890 and 2870 were extremely strong running motors. I had the chance to spend many hours in both and they were a joy to drive. Those Scania diesels had so much torque it was unreal. I had the chance to put many hours on a 895 Versatile when it was new and it felt pretty tame compared to the Case.

I guess the the feel was not very accurate. Nebraska tests as follows.

4890, max drawbar hp. 218.68 @ 5.95 mph. 14.19Hp.hr/gal. Max increase in pull 27% @ 1315 rpm.

895, max drawbar hp. 251.51 @ 6.46 mph. 15.15Hp.hr/gal. Max increase in pull 34% @ 1470 rpm.

th e895's in the yard here I am pretty sure are not tame

In the scheme of things the one will pull a 10 bottom 720 plow 5.4 compared to the first 895 that would only pull it a 4.6

that is a garmin gps speed readout

I could be wrong on the halfway through, but some did in fact come from the factory with 855's. I've seen 3-4 of them in my life. They weren't aftermarket conversions.

Conflicting info in that thread, a few claim they had the 855 a few say otherwise. I dont doubt there were a few experimentals and I know there are a few with 855's but I am 99% sure none came off the line set for production with anything but the big V8 Scania. Parts diagrams support that idea as well.

Yes, 48’s did not have a Cummins, 49’s could. Gratton Coulee Agri Parts has wrecked several of each 49’s.

Maybe the Case had more wheel slip going on? Only problem I've ever heard mention of on the Scania 6-bangers was that goofy centrifuge needed frequent servicing. Other than that they were strong running engines.

I am aware of that, and AFAIK, the V-8 did not have that goofy centrifuge for the engine oil. Also, he was talking about 4890 and 2870 model tractors, which both had 6 cylinders.

My neighbor has a 4890 & 4894 for sale. 2388 caseIH also. Gentleman passed away and family is selling equipment. I am currently storing both tractors plus a 2590 for them. The two 4wheelers have approx. 5500 hours each. Pretty nice machines for the age. PTO and 3 point on both. Big singles on 4890 and 18.4 duals on 4894. Just thought I'd throw this info out if anyone was interested.
