Subject: JD 7000 FERTILIZER OPENERS

South West Michigan

We have a 7000 CONSERTIL ('83) with the double disc fertilizer openers that has 1/2 of the blade bearings in POOR shape. I have been on the SHOUP'S site looking for just the replacement bearing but can not find them. They offer a complete disc/bearing combo though, but our discs are in decent shape(13" vrs. 13 1/2").  Is there a way to remove a bearing out of the disc and match up a bearing locally and re-install? I also noted that there are let/right handed threads involved like the seed openers,is that correct? THANKS.

Yes, left and right hand threads. I changed the bearing on one blade and that was enough of that.....purchased the entire blade for the remaining openers. Just my opinion, but it takes too much time to cut the rivets and re-rivet the hubs together......

I think this is the part # you are looking for at shoup ...Part # SH41485. According to shoup website both the seed and fertilizer openers use the same bearing.

I might add to that, if you do change the bearings you can use bolts and lock nuts instead of rivets.....it is easier.

If you are notilling I would high recommend shoup's Part # SH37500 .. A notch disk and a smaller disk .. Work really well in some stalks. Well worth the cost for the time it takes..

Thanks guys. I have never seen that configuration for openers before, something to consider for sure. Does anyone have any thoughts on drag chains;are they worth the effort/cost for planting corn?

I use the one notched disc and one smooth disc on my double disc fert openers. It does help some, but the notched disc is larger diameter which creates some side force on the whole opener. This hasn't caused any real problems in the 4 years I have used them set up this way. As far as drag chains, I run one 15"spike and one standard rubber closing wheel with drag chains behind like the job it does. Patrick

Put chains on 2 years ago and they work Great.
There is about a fist load of soft soil that is always in front of the loop of chain that covers the seed and seed trench up.
I bought the square link chain and I never tried regular chain, so I do not know if it will work or not.

Thanks soya. BTW,can the metal dust cap be salvaged when removing the discs? I took a quick glance at them and didn't "see" a good groove to get into to pry them out.
