Have a bull from last year's calf crop that we ended up putting in the fats pen. Will he be any good as a butcher beef? He will be about a year and a half old when he goes to slaughter. Other alternatives would be to sell him as a long yearling bull at local sale barn. He is a black angus, good looking but not registered or out of A.I. sire so nothing special. We have never butchered a bull before so hence my ignorance.

East ks | You are going to get a lot of off the wall opinions on this. Most from people who seldom butcher bull. With that said we have been doing the same bull butcher program for years. Keep the odd one don't let him get too big ( 1200lb max). You won't know the difference in a steer the same size.

West Chazy, New York | Probably a little more important that he not get stirred up before you kill him.

NE Iowa | If you feed him like your fats - and don't let him get too big - he'll be good. Don't think you'll tell him from the other fat cattle. We've butchered bulls before and they've been fine. Actually had one customer years ago that requested to get young bulls for his butcher beef.

So. Eastern IL | We’ve been doing it for several years. As long as he hasn’t been exposed to females you should be fine. There was one year we could taste a little bull right next to the bone on a T-bone steak, but it was very minimal, you basically had to chew on the bone to notice. Weight hasn’t really been an issue with us. We have had some go 1,300-1,500 lbs. I think age can be an issue however if you get much over the 1.5-2 year range. We actually prefer bulls as they seem to have better growth and marbling.

ND | Fat virgin bull should be very good . IDK but heard in Europe they fatten young virgin bulls for a premium market. Edited by buckmaster 12/31/2017 08:37

Casey IL. ( I -70 ) then south on rt.49 | If he has never been used he will be the best eating you have ate. Other wise sell him as a bull.

Southern kansas | One fall this old man in his upper 80s stopped by to look at my cows and tell his story. He said he had sold his cows and saved back 7 black bulls to feed out in his barn. The next fall he stopped by again and said he would never feed bulls again because they kept breaking their chains!!! I said, oh so you bought some new calves to feed. No he said, still feeding the same bulls. I ask how old are these bulls. He replied 7 years, I don't like baby beef.

north west arkansas | I've done a few and never had an issue. I've got an uncle in his 80's that's fed cattle all his life. He use to buy a yearling bull every year. Bred his cows with him then put him in the fat pen to butcher for himself.
