Stoddard Co. SEMO | I've got two 9 speed transmissions in day cab trucks. I'm currently looking at another day cab truck that also has a 9 speed, but 3rd and 4th on the low side and 7th and 8th are swapped. Why is this different from my other eaton fullers?

this was fairly common on older transmissions especially in the 8LL versions. Can be a pain if you are not used to it like when you are down shifting.

Geuda Springs, Kansas | Is t that because they are an overdrive transmission? I think you can tear a 9 regular 9 speed apart and put it back together with those two gears backwards and have overdrive. You are correct, the backward shift pattern would be annoying.

Traverse City MI | That's an X pattern cover. You can pull the shift lid and change it with a regular cover if you want. Then it will shift the same.

Snipesville, GA | We have two 9's and one is the backwards 9 that some refer to as an upside down 9. This is I think the 8LL transmission also that has double reduction. Does double reduction have any affect on shift pattern? Here's my pattern R 2 5 Lo 3 4 Edited by tater1086 12/15/2017 09:29

NENE | Agree. Some transmissions with an overdrive gear in high will be backward but the shift cover has an extra linkage to reverse the pattern back to normal.

Stoddard Co. SEMO | So, is there any performance difference between the two?

Cleveland, MS. Own small farm near Booneville, MS | Backward shift pattern usually indicates that it is an overdrive transmission. If you have ever heard the expression "Throw it up against the dash." That's what they're talking about. I can't remember the designations right now but the same transmission is available with the standard shift pattern. If memory serves correctly the overdrive is about 27%. Edit to add: I think I remember that the "turned around 8 and 9" is designated by the letters RTO and the standard shift pattern of a 9 speed overdrive is RTX, but memory is sketchy at best as I haven't dealt with any of this in several years.
