I have a 9 speed Eaton in my 1994 Mack semi and the gear shifter is extremely sloppy I’m wondering how hard it is to fix I’ve been told it is probably in the shift tower and not in the transmission

It’s only four bolts to pull the shift tower off after whatever it takes to get through the floor of your truck. Once it’s off, whatever is wrong will probably be pretty obvious.

There isn’t much to go wrong in a 9 speed.

Usually there is an "isolator" bushing which welded onto the gearshift. It also it held onto the shift tower with a pin through it that also has a couple bushing on it. Most of the time a new isolator bushing assembly fixes it. Sometimes it takes a shift tower assembly as well. None of it is very complicated to change.

One of our trucks went from banging your knuckles on the dash when shifting and hardly being able to tell if you're in gear when wiggling the shifter to a nice tight pattern like a sports car if that is what you are talking about. It was a half hour job. Bushing slides into the bottom of shift tower that connects to transmission.

Have taken the shift tower out and built up the ball on the end of it with a welder, to take out some of the slop. Smooth it back up with a flap wheel on a 4" grinder, and roll on.

I have it tore apart and I’m fairly certain all the sloppy ness is in the top part that is circled, how do I get it apart?
