Anyone have opinions on Gehl Skidsteers? Good, bad what to look for or avoid? Looking at used ones. For general farm use. No livestock. Thanks. Nearest dealer sells Gehl.

I have a Gehl 5640E, Pretty much does everything I want it to do. Heavy enough to lift large trees, pallets of seed corn chemical etc. I have the tbar controls, really easy to get used too. I had a 5635 previous to this one. A Gehl will be my next machine.

Very good simple machines. I have one, my FIL has had three. It seems the earlier 5?40 series were the most dependable. 2 speed, hyd detach and cab can make a 30-40% difference in cost. I have a duetz water cooled with turbo. It starts great in cold weather and has good power. Some of the later ones were yanmars with no turbo, they didn't have quite the power in my experience.

Its not mine, but this is a pretty good deal, it has 2 speed and cab, and looks from the pictures it has hyd detach. https://masoncity.craigslist.org/grd/d/2009-gehlhours-loaded/6404992...

My first skid was/is a 5635SXT. Turboed Duetz that's 80 horses. Good machine. about 4500 hours on him. It has the hand controls like a Case skidsteer.

Next machine is a 7810E. He's an ounry skid steer. Very stout. Cummins engine with piolet controls.

I'm not terribly fond of the Gehl T bar controls. Looks to me like your wrists would get to hurtin after a while using them.

Use mine for moving hay, tree saw, brush grapple, forklift style work, and whatever else I can come up with. Very good machine!!

We have two on our dairy. 4640 and a 5240 both have @ 5000 hrs. I went through all of the earlier models and wouldn't recommend you buy any of them (25s, 30s and 35s). The 40s however have been very good, Gehl got it right on this one. We previously had a 40 with T-bars and have switch to the joysticks on our current models. Had no mechanical problems with the Ts but my Dad and I both had an issue with carpal tunnel. That issue disappeared with the joysticks. Keep in mind we put several hours on these things daily, you shouldn't have any problems with the Ts with just general usage and the older machine with the T-bars did operate a little easier and smoother. Our 5240 has the 2 speed, a must if you're picking up bales in the field or if your operation is spread out. They both have the arm flotation, wouldn't have one without it. The 52 with the extra counterweight can handle a pallet, the 46 not so much. BTW the 46, 48 and the 52 are the same horsepower. The 48 is just 4 inches longer and the 52 is the newer version of the 48. My 46 has a yanmar engine and the 52 has a Duetz, both are turbos and both are good. The yanmar does seem to use more fuel and the Duetz will start harder in the cold. One word of warning, do not get the first 40s with the 3 cylinder engines, nothing but problems.

adding to this we have a 5240e with a yanmar and is very good. Also have a v400 and am happy. Have owned gehl for quite a while and have been overall happy

I think gehls are very under rated. I have a 4635 sxt and it has a lot of grunt for it's size, and I use it hard at times. My dad has ran gehls for as long as I can remember. He does a lot of work in northern Wisconsin and says there are a ton of gehls up there on dairy farms. If they hold up in that environment that has to mean something.

I don't have any experience with one, but I remember I was on a bin site one time and the owner was shuttling sheets with his Gehl and it seemed pretty strong and stout. Lifted double bundles with ease and good balance. Quiet too. I thought the cab looked like visibility might be an issue, maybe, but otherwise it'd be something I'd consider.
