I'm just tossing around a few ideas of maybe looking for a Cat 85 or 95, probably the E series. I wanted to see what experiences anyone has had with them. I've got several years experience with 55s, just looking for something a little bigger. Anything you can share about them would be appreciated.

95 was only an "E" series and had 410 engine HP. 85-E was 380 ?? HP........same exact tractor with less fuel to the engines injectors.

Southeast Washington

in our steep hills we have worked with tracked tractors for several generations. Farms used to overhaul steel track tractors that grandfathers bought and keep them in service on the farm. Moving into the Challengers, the E series is also a highly sought after workhorse that had most of the bugs worked out by then and they don't come up for sale very often around here anymore. Once they find a home on a farm they pretty much are going to live the rest of their lives there.

Pretty nice machines. Ours Isn't leaving any time soon.

We spend the vast bulk of maintenance time and money on undercarriage and tracks. Other than that, difficult to tear up.

Not a fancy tractor, but I don't know if there is a more dependable one out there. In the decade I've owned mine, we've replaced the tracks, starter, and cab fan motor. Keep good fuel filters on it and change regularly. Check the boggie oil level in spring and fall. There just aren't many issues with them. Most Cat mechanics I've talked to say to keep it as long as possible.

Interstate 35 North ia
The Ziegler Mechanic I deal with told us to keep the 95E as long as we can also , The taller drive wheels on the newer tractors are an advantage to the early rubber track cats but the old B,C,D, and E tractors are well built !!

At one time someone had posted that the 95e had a special coated transmission shaft to handle the extra hp. Not sure if coated was the correct word. you could check the parts book. The only draw back I see is the hyd's, mechanical levers, and average cab for that era.
