I thought the s7xx series was the same as the s6xx machines other than a few updates to do with the technology side of things, Power and capacity were the same..

The flagships are a hell of a combine except for one thing. Way too much premature wear in areas that should last longer IMO. And those areas are expensive to fix. Maybe Deere is no better, I don't know.

We ran a Deere s680 vs a case Ih 8120 in high yielding winter wheat. The case had a macdon and Deere had Deere's draper. The 8120 was all over the Deere. We used to run all Green now have a red combine. The case handled the lodged wheat better, and the chopper did a better job of both cutting and spreading the residue. Now our combine we ordered with extended wear rotor, but it had a standard wear transition cone, if you order the machine make sure you get that, we wore a hole in ours at about 1500 separator hours. The extended wear solves this. The best thing is being able to reverse the feeder by itself, and the ability to rock the rotor if you plug the machine. The case will feed much smoother in all conditions. Cutting 40ft in lodged winter wheat is tough on any machine, but knowing that you can unplug machine from the cab gives you peace of mind.

We ran a 9770 next to a 9120 and definitely did not see this in high yielding malt barley. 9120 went faster but threw more over, used more fuel, and had a slower unloading rate. Not a bad machine, but it was not as 1 sided as this guy makes it seem. THe 9770 chopper did twice the job of the red one as well... even the 9760 did better as it had a power cast tailboard.

All that being said, an 780 vs 8240 would be a tough choice.

I've had my 9120 for five years, and it was two years old when I bought it. It has 1575 engine hours, and I have had only one break down. It had one injector go bad.

It is a rice machine so it is all extended wear. Mechanic went over it today, only thing needed is patch a little hole in the hopper. So we will lay stainless under cross augers. We have lined the rethrasher and clean grain cross auger with stainless.

Machine had 475 hrs. In rice when I bought it.

At only 275 I'd hope no mechanic touched it

Go with the 8240, we are on our 4th set of 8240's. buy 11 new ones every year. They are good machines if you buy extended wear. We put between 550 to 700 sep hrs on each every year.

We have been red for awhile but tried a 680 in corn and hated the grain sample. Had dealer out three times to help set it. Finally told them to come get it. Later found out elavator was wondering who was combining our corn because of the quality.

The Deere corn head was better and unloads faster. Only two good things I can say about it. This was a new 680 against a 8230. Case paints the extended wear items red so you can tell when looking at machines.

9120 has larger engine. Get 8120, (now 8240)and chip it. Been red combines for me since college (worked at CNH dealer now for farmer) wouldn't even consider anything but red. Maintenance is key as I have a 8010 running with about 3500 sepetator hours that has had cone welded never replaced. Only breakdowns this year that come to mind are fan belt, wires for right hand concoule rubbing, spreader motor leaked, spreader bolt came off and spreader fell off. Now that's over 2000 to 2500 acres corn, 700 acres wheat and 1300 beans roughly.

Seen alot of sts combines burn to the ground with less hours then that on.... guess a mechanic never touched them either.
