SC Kansas | Looking for a cart tractor, would get 250 hours a year on the grain cart and miscellaneous tillage, probably a 270.Are they money pits when the hours get around 8 to 10000? |

Central, WI | At least a dozen Mx models around here that have come thru my small independent shop. Used for almost everything from heavy pto work to loader and mixer wagons. Anywhere from 3000 to 24,000 hours on them. Main items I noted over the years was good power, fuel efficiency and way better cabs with better visibility over previous models. Heavier frames with more weight over previous models also. Heavier front axles in later models also that stood up to loader work and heavy ballasting.
Now a few negatives but nothing major if maintained by the book of more often. Some did not get along well with the CAPS pump but that was mainly due to operator inattention during start-up. Yes, Case could have designed it to be idiot proof but did not. Best cure for that was to turn the key 30 seconds before ignition. It primed the whole system properly and saved the pump over time. 9000 hours on some here with no issues doing that. Mechanical pump updates kits were around $8,000 and some customers went that route after a CAPS failure. One's prior to 105,000 s/n needed some updated wiring also. Center drive shaft U-joint failures on models over 180hp was common on half of them in the first 3000 to 5000 hours. Front axle seals, pins and sun/ring gears needing rebuild were less common on a couple, due to higher hours with no oil change.
With one in the 8000 to 10000 hour range, look for good maintenance history on it to be sure. Motor and tranny was fairly reliable. |

| I have a completely different view on the first gen MX series. I've been working on them since they came out in 99 and their still one of the biggest POS that CIH has ever produced. The good is a great cab and indestructible PTO, The bad is they will take out the engine drive shaft joints and or flexplate every 3-4 thousand hours. If that doesn't happen, I promise you'll be putting in an engine pan gasket within that time and then you'll have to pull the motor. We've never had a Caps pump last over 5k hours and that was very rare, but you'll keep busy fixing blown hyd lines under the cab if you don't need to work on the pump. You need to pull the fuel tank to replace the fuel sending unit which involves taking the wheels off. You better hope your hyd controller computer doesn't go bad. We've had two go bad in the last year and they are no longer available and you have to take the controller off and send it to CNH and they will repair it for you for about $3000 because Ag Express can't do anything with them.Any hyd valve stack leak will leave crying if you have to fix it. Just look for the valves and you'll see why. When everything is running they really are nice to drive, but then you find out that their a mutt for power. I could carry on about lots more which was a common problem to all of them but I'll quit.A guy by me just picked up a 7 thousand hour 270 for 35k, resale is a mirror of the reputation of the product. Other than that I like em.

| We’ve got a 240 at 8,000 hours and have done the pump, oil pan gasket and fuel tank sending unit. Still on the whole that tractor has done a LOT of work for me for a pretty reasonable cost of ownership. |

western iowa,by Denison | we bought 1998 and 1999 8400 john deeres-one is over 10,000 hours and other is approaching that mark-I had many chances to buy the red tractors as my brother sells them,my other brother has had several-for some odd reason when they approach over 3,000 hours he gets new ones-really don't know much about the case ih tractors-the 8400 jd tractors have been trouble free-like the cab on the ih-but always notice things on the ih tractors that are not great
if buying used you can buy same hour jd's and probably have less problems |

Mount Upton NY | MX 270. Nothing good about them. Junk from front to back. The newer model Case IH tractors are better |

Guymon, OK | We've got a MX270 with ~10,400 hours. It was a money pit well before 8000 hours. It currently has a terrible hydraulic leak under the cab (not the first one), and a persistent transmission fault that I think has something to do with the clutch position sensor as there is no feathering the clutch pedal; it's either all or nothing. There is also something not quite right about the hydraulic remotes, but the problem is hard to explain, which makes it hard to diagnose. We've had problems with the dreaded CAPS pump before, but changing the filters regularly and not running it out of fuel helps keep that part alive.
The thing is, our 270 gets a lot more than 250 hours per year. If you can find one in good shape and don't beat the tar out of it, it might last a long time. It's still hard for me to recommend a first generation MX. The second gen (MX285) has a few improvements, but there are a lot of things they didn't start doing right until the third gen (MX305). The third gen uses an ISOBUS system instead of a bunch of stand-alone controllers, which greatly improved the reliability of the electronics. |

northern MN | I had a mx 200,220, 230 and two boxcars in 2002 i now am all jd. The early MXs were bad tractors... new i would say jd is the questionable one and the cih seems to be a little better (small little). JD is a changed company and not for the better in my opinion. |

| Interesting read, I've owned an 02 MX270 for about 3 years now, and really like it. It had a new caps pump put on shortly before I got it, and have done some tune-up items on it like the injectors, turbo, and serviced it front to back right from the start. Knock on wood, its been a really good machine. Mine has about 8300 hours on it, we use it for all of the planting, and the grain cart in the fall. The only downfall I'd mention is watch for the ones with big 1000 pto only. If you find one you like however, I happen to know of someone who made replacement shafts to convert them to small 1000--that would be me. |

Iowa - Floyd County | I agree. Love our MX200, been an awesome tractor. Just got rid of an MX305, biggest problem piece of equipment we have ever had. Probably just like everything else though, some are good some are not. |
