Oklahoma | Tell me about an international 684 tractor? Good, bad, or Ugly? Local one for sale that looks sharp but never worked around an IH. Edit to add, how are parts availability and hydraulics on them. Thanks in advance. Edited by jcs 10/9/2017 20:25

New London, Wisconsin | I sold those for a dealer when they were new. People loved them and I sold lots of them in our area. It was a good reliable tractor. I now own a 685 XL myself. A generation newer and has a nice cab. Jim

Garland Maine | I have several of the 84 series. There are a lot of aftermarket parts for them. They work well for us. 784 has a slightly larger bore engine than 684. D246 vs D239. The D239 used in the 684 was also used in generators. If you use good hydraulic fluid they prime quite easily after a filter change unless the pump is worn out. The cheap "303" fluid does not work well in the 84 series. The cheap 303 doesn't work below freezing. You can get different hydraulic pump drive gears to put out up to 17 gpm. Not a lot compared to a bigger modern tractor, but quite adequate for a utility tractor. This is open center hydraulics. The 84 series that get a lot of loader hours seem to have problems with steering cylinders. All of mine have some form of hydraulic drip from the steering cylinder. I suppose I could bite the bullet and buy a replacement cylinder, but my cheapskate self just throws seal kits at them occasionally. They could have been ordered with up to 3 hydraulic remotes and/or a power beyond plate to send hydraulic to a loader joystick. You can add hydraulic remotes from a junkyard fairly easily if you can find them. There are 3 styles of valves that were used in the course of production. So what are you planning to do with it?

Walnut Grove MN USA | Dad had a 784 rowcrop way back when. They are a British built tractor so some things are a little odd. Hot tractor in the summer, engine fan blows heat right back on you and you are straddling the transmission. Dad traded it for a 4020 and that was a big step up in comfort and ease of use. Don’t miss that thing.

Madison Co. Virginia | I have an inherited 784 in well-used condition, but have not put it to use yet. I'm confident it will do well on a tmr mixer. I saw a IH advertisement for the 84 series, where the farmer was quoted, "My horsepower requirements are not large, but my workload is." Implying that the tractors were overbuilt or underpowered, depending on your perspective.

Eastern Half of Kansas | We have a 584 that's mostly retired to lighter duty now. Probably has 20,000 hours on it. Tach hasn't worked forever. It is a loader tractor, replaced a lot of clutches before we bought skid steer, overhauled it 4 years ago now. We raked with a Vermeer R23A rake for 7 years so hydraulics aren't bad on them. Like said above they're hot in summer time. Straddle the transmission and sit low on them.

Idaho | Have two Hydro 84 MFWD tractors and for loader work they are great. Both motors have been O/Hed. One was bad head gasket plus wore out and 2nd was getting coolant in the oil. Have no idea how many hours are on either tractor as both were bought used. Parts have not been a problem. Have been able to get parts for everything that I have repaired on them so far. Have had no issues with hyd's. Use hytran for fluid. I would not hesitate to buy another of this series tractor. Edited by IHC 1470 10/9/2017 22:05

Ontario | We had a 685 xl with cab. Biggest pos on planet. Transmission whine unbearable. Dealer had it tore down and couldn't figure it out. Gear shifters are on wrong side. Hydraulics pulsate causing steering valve to blow leaking oil in cab. Engine was gutless and didn't like the cold. Best time was when it rode away on the back of a truck.

We have a 584 with a 2250 loader. The front end aren't the strongest for loader work, but it takes about 2 minutes to take the loader off and it's a really handy little tractor. We used to use it baling straw and the oil cooler isn't big enough or something. They hydraulics would get real hot. Has about 7000 hours on it and other than a few clutches really hasn't had much done to it. Amazing at how much we still use it.

That would be a problem, and it sounds like yours was a problem tractor. other than the shifter being left handed, mine has none of those qualities. No whine, no oil leaks, no pulsating, it starts great. I won't even think of selling it.
