western iowa,by Denison | We have a 2388 with singles and run a 6row 30 corn head and 20ft 1020 bean head-get along really well except with bean head on side hills-which all my farms are side hills-thinking about buying a newer 3020 head but very few that are 20ft-my brother has 3020 25fts on hand all the time--we are pushing enough problems with out a field tracker with a 20ft-so has anyone put a field tracker on a 2388? or would I be better off to buy a 2388 with it on-? Does anyone run a 3020 head? Or is a 1020 the same? We tried a 8row 30 corn head but we get more done with the 6row as to get back on rounds and unload-we only have 2 that harvest Adam runs the combine and I usually haul away. I could hire the neighbors to combine but I personally enjoy running the combine or hauling it away myself-and we do bale the bean stubble -before drilling rye so like to drop that in a windrow. Add field tracker?BUy 25ft 3020? Just buy a 3020 20ft? Buy a different 2388 with duals and field tracker-go to 25ft head?Run 8row30 corn head? Buy 2388-leave 25ft 3020 on combine and run old 2388 only in corn? Hire neighbor to do beans?$35acre? Edited by garvo 10/6/2017 07:58

I can run a 30 foot, with duals, better than a 20 on singles sometime have to "help" the head with that said, the 21 with duals, and field tracker, will spoil the driver LOL makes me want to fix the sensors on the 16

west central Iowa | We put field tracker on 2388, was not a bad job. The hardest part was getting the electric pins to seat in plugs correctly, so everything worked when we got done.

Central Illinois | Like you, a 6 row corn head "works" here. Running a 2577 and switched from a 25' 1020 to a 30' 2162 Draper. This platform flexes enough that the field tracker is not used. Have been running 73 x 44-32 floaters since 2009 for both heads and get along great.

Northwest Iowa | Not sure on the IH part of the equation, but your choices open up quite a bit if you consider running a JD head on the combine. Not too bad of a conversion and they are plentiful.

Hennepin, IL | What kind of shape is the combine in? Would there be anything else to gain by upgrading or is this a good machine that you feel comfortable dropping a chunk of $ into? That's the real question to me. If it's one you plan on keeping, spend the money on FT then get yourself a nice, later model 1020 either 25 or 30'. Altogether it should be about the same or less money than a 25' 3020 and will do you a better job than a 3020 without FT. Saw the last option about hiring a neighbor. Don't overlook that one either. If it frees you up to do something else and they can come in with a draper or something to possibly save some bu it may be a win-win. Especially if it frees up some time to keep the landlady happy. Get a 2162 draper or MacDon FD70 draper. I don't use contour master on the combine anymore as the adaptor on the draper heads have a lot of flex. We cut a lot of terraces also.

Sort of Central to North Central Iowa | I faced the same situation with a 2388 without tracker, single wheels, only with a 30' 1020. I considered putting the tracker on, but instead applied the money that that would cost to a MacDon head. On my ground that eliminated the need for field tracker, and the combine seems like a completely different machine in soybeans due to the even feeding. I don't know what a 3020 head would cost, but consider spending that money and the money for field tracker toward a draper? May not work in your situation, but something to consider.

What problem does that address? Red heads are all over the place.

west central Iowa | I put axle extensions and switched to 24.5x32 from 28L26s so my 1660 so it would work better with a 20' 1020. But then I ended up selling my 1020 for a profit and bought an updated 216 JD head on the cheap. I think the 1020 would have worked a lot better with the extensions and the bigger tires seem a lot less squishy than the old ones especially with some in the tank. The Deere head cuts a little closer even on the flat.

NW Missouri | Depends on the shape of the combine. If it's in good shape - add field tracker. If it's starting to get worn out, trade combines. You may do a really good job with your 20' now, but I bet you'll do a better job with a 25-30' head with field tracker. I went from a 20' without lateral tilt to a 25' with field tracker, and I'll never own another combine without it. More power to you if you want to keep shelling 6 rows at a time, but I'd be looking for a bigger hopper topper or something. I have a 6 row head for a couple small custom jobs, and it seems like it takes forever compared to the 8 row. I can never remember to fold the damn ladder up either!

Farm in WC Iowa | Garvo Iwould think you could swap out the entire feederhouse (12500 on all state ag) fairly easily if you were partial to your machine. Even easier to trade it out on a different 2388. Perhaps your brother would give you a good deal even? I'm not sure what is most cost effective. We run a 25' on singles with field tracker with no issues in more hills than you. (You know, the type that upsets the chopper guy) Also run 8-22" corn head so we need singles to fit down the rows in corn. I know in rougher ground dual axles like to snap.

Boone, Iowa | I figured all combines out your way would come from the dealer with field tracker. We put one on a 2188 several years ago. It was straightforward and the price was around $5500, if I recall correctly. I think the field tracker with a 30 ft head worked better than a 25 ft without field tracker, but I'm on flatter ground. I was never impressed with the stiffness of a 1020 head and I don't know if a 3020 flexes any better. I have been happy with my Harvestmore head on my 2388. A full-finger auger turned my head into a poor man's draper head.

WC IA | Add field tracker if happy with current combine. if want to trade, go to a 6088 or 7088 and hang a 30ft 2162/fd70 on it.
