Subject: AHHC / Potentiometer review (14-16-21XX CIH combines)

Manitoba
Fairly normal to see questions posted here regarding header height control and I struggled getting our 1680's and 1020's working properly as it was all new to me. Thought I would post a pic of the 3 versions of potentiometers and their part numbers and what I think is the correct combinations of header / combine / and pot. I THINK I understand them now but if I have something wrong please let me know. I do not know what type of pot was used on the pre 1995 1020's originally as none of the 1020's we have owned have had the original pots on them and service bulletin documents can be confusing (for me anyway) . I think it is the pot on the left ( #245885C93, and this pot works with my 1680 with factory AHHC.

the following is what I have come up with.

1020 1995 or older pre serial number JJC0215001 with the cable linkage when used on a 21XX or 23XX need the pot # 127360A2. in the picture it is the clear / Amber pot on the right.

1020 1995 and newer than the above serial number and 1020's updated to the mechanical linkage (non cable) use pot # 86616339. in the pic it is the centre pot. I don't have field tracker on our combines but the 30' 1020 I have came equipped with field tracker. the field tracker on the head we have used the same pot on each end (# 86616339) this pot works with 21XX and 23XX combines directly, just hook up.

If you have a 14XX or 16XX combine and have a 1020 with either of the above mentioned pots ( 127360A2 or 86616339) you have 2 options. replace the pot you have with pot # 245885C93 (the pot on the left in the picture) or add an adapter (part # 434795A1) I ran into this issue on our combinations and was going to order this part but a tech at dealer told me not to bother and just switch the power and ground terminal in the connection to the pot. A case service bulletin I have indicates the same ("essentially this adapter switches the power and ground terminals in the pot so that the AHHC will function correctly") I have read elsewhere that this adapter also has diodes in it that slow down the signal rate but service bulletin does not mention this and since I don't have one I can't say if just switching power and ground works as well as the adapter would.

The pot on the left (# 245885C93) works directly with 16XX combine (and service bulletin indicates the same for 14XX but I don't have one to confirm that)

I have installed a used AHHC from a wrecker in one of our 1680's and it confused me as wiring was not the same as in the other combine we had or what was in the service manual for the combine. also when I switched the wires as indicated in the service bulletin it did not work. What I think happened is that the AHHC I received was from either a late 16XX or 21XX combine because when I went and switched the wires back to original all worked normally.

some wiring info

pot on left # 245885C93 terminal A is ground (light Green / White wire), terminal B is sigal (Dark Green), terminal C is power (light Green / Black)
pot in middle # 86616339 terminal A is power (green / black), terminal B is signal (light Blue / White), terminal C is Ground (Green/White)
pot on right # 127360A2 terminal A is power (red), Terminal B is signal (light blue), terminal C is ground (Black)

Hope maybe that helps somebody, mostly me next year when I have forgotten all of it and have an issue. if I have anything screwed up with this please let me know so I can improve my notes.

one other thing, the pot on the left and the pot on the right have posts coming out of them that you connect your cable or linkage to. the one in the middle has a cavity in it that an external post from the linkage goes into. so if your playing with or making your own linkages that will change how you can switch between them.

The one in middle

hook it up to the combine
it will work "up" clocked at like 1:00 o'clock

it will work as "down" clocked at like 7:00 oclock
