Subject: Priefert Head Gate

Northern Alberta
Hello all. Right now I have an older Hi Hog squeeze chute. I am tired of having to prod cows to get them to go through the auto head gate, which really isn't auto when you get smart old cows. You have to hold it wide open anyways then catch them as they come through. Then they are either leaning or pulling back on it, which makes it tough to open and if they are pulling back, you have to open it inward, then they try to run through the head before you can open it outward and I am worried one of these days I am going to get a cow's hips or something stuck in that head gate. Anyways, I was l watching videos of Priefert's S04 chute and I like how the head gate works on that chute. However I have read that some larger cows are a tough fit in the squeeze. Since my Hi Hog seems to have lots of room in it for very large cows, I was wondering if it would be worth looking into mounting the Priefert HG91 head gate (the one that is on the S04 chute) onto my Hi Hog? Anybody ever mount that headgate on a different model of chute? Just wondering what everyone's thought on this would be? Thanks guys!

You could fit a monster cow through an S04. I use my S01 with my biggest cows and 1500# bull. It's light duty compared to the best chutes. But good enough here.

My cows don't really hit the head gate hard enough for the auto to work. But that is not related to the quality of product. Just laid back cattle.

It's the headgate that limits the cow size. They list the hg91 as having an opening width of 27.5 inches. Very few cows will be too big to fit through that.

I thought that the chute itself looked fair sized. If that's the case maybe I'll look into getting an entire chute. Thanks.

The Hi Hog seems heavy duty enough. Kinda wondering now if buying an entire chute would be the answer, or if sticking to my original thought of mounting that head gate on the Hi Hog..... Like I said, I do like how that head gate works. When you have to manually run a swinging automatic head gate 'cause your cows won't go in it, you gotta have your hand on the handle, which the cow sees, then that makes her not want to go..... The Priefert's head gate handle seems nice and out of the way of the path the cow needs to go. I should just sell all my quiet old cows and buy crazy heifers, that would solve everything lol.

They use the same gate 91 on the s01 and s04. Width should not be a factor. I added a palp cage on my S01 and it makes it feel a lot bigger/longer.

I run very large cows through my S04. I would be more concerned about length than width.

South west Ohio Near Dayton

I concur on the size of the S01 and the S04,  I have S01 and the hg is not the limiting factor.  The whole chute is well engineered and and a good buy,  not as convenient as the big hydraulic ones but work well.  That said the HG91 is made separate piece and should be easy to adapt.  four or so good big bolts and it is mounted.

I will be doing this to my chute soon. My wife is headed back from Salt Lake City as we speak with a Model 91 with a frame. Used very little. Bought it for $400. I will be cutting the manual rope pull head catch off my old chute and weld the frame of the 91 to mine. Then I'll bolt the 91 to the frame. With my current head catch, you must weigh at least 140 lbs and be strong. When my wife helps me she has to hang on (dangle from) the rope to catch the cow, and that's not 100% effective. Not a chance that any of my kids can do it, though they've tried.

I'll be doing this for the meantime, as I'm planning on building a hydraulic chute this winter.

Are you going to modify and existing chute or completely from scratch build one? I've been thinking about switching my formost to hydraulic. Wouldn't take much work at all.

From what I have seen and heard of the For-Most chutes, I think it would be an excellent candidate to add hydraulics to, and I agree, I think it would be a piece of cake. I will be starting from scratch. My squeeze chute is very lightly built and has lots of things I don't like. It works OK for Holsteins, but black cows tear it up. I also want to be able to incorporate different features from different chutes that I like. Below are pictures of my chute. You can see that it's not worth doing much to. The lever at the front of the chute with the frayed white rope is around my height. I'm 6'4". You can see from the head-on shot of the head catch how one of my big black cows bent it when she thought she could go through it at a dead run.

SwMo on Ks line
Titan West Chutes are big and stout and they use Preifert headgates as their standard manual headgate. They have been adapted to lots of chutes .Good luck. Also fairly easy to make hydraulic headgate out of one.

I added a priefert 91 to a silver king chute over 20 yrs ago, I like that headpiece better than any manual I have used,
