This makes the 4th week in a row that Menards is having their 11% reabte sale on everything going on. Not complaining but I've noticed more of their 11% discounts this year then ever before. Makes you think you shouldn't buy anything from them unless they have a sale going on. I wonder how many people don't mail in their rebate forms? I always do.

I don't have any financial numbers but by just looking at the parking lots Menards locally does more business then Home Depot and Lowes combined. I personally do very little business with Lowes and even less with Home Depot.

I just bought $4,000 worth of deck materials at Menards because they were alot cheaper than our local store without the discount.Good quality also I will add. If you do the math it barely covers the sales tax but it all helps in the end.

Its a continuously running program, not a sale. Two things about it if you are going to take part - pick up the mail-in coupon from the service desk as soon as you leave the checkout and be sure to mail it in by the due date. They keep older coupons behind the counter up until their expire date if you didnt pick one up at time of purchase.
Its a very strange program considering the format and stipulations, i would like someone to explain what advantage the process has for menards.

I always send them in, but it gets really annoying when you only spend $10-20 for the dates of the purchases. Hardly covers the cost of the stamp. I wish they could just give you the discount up front.

Locally, I believe Menards does better (lumber/building materials) than Home Depot/Lowes because you can drive into their lumber yard and load things. Home Depot/Lowes probably do better with appliances and tools, blinds, etc. My experience is people buying at Lowes/Home Depot, are probably people who have built new houses and are looking for small DIY upgrades like lights, blinds, appliances, tools....where the Menards crowd tends to draw more contractors and people taking on larger projects....

Roaming the plains

They bank on the percentage of folks that don't mail in the rebate.

Locally Lowe's has been matching it but it's an easier online registration or still mailed in if preferred.

You can print out the 11% rebate coupons online and fill them out. Still have to mail them in though. Since I live in Menards backyard there isn't any home depot or Lowes around, but you can bet the Menards stores are always busy.

They draw you in for big purchases with 11% rebate, then probably only get 50% of the people that get them filled out and sent in, then you get your rebate back as store credit. So you are back in the store again, spending that 11% on more purchases on product that has at least a 50% markup, and you are very likely to spend well above that rebate, so that is additional sales volume that may have not materialized if you hadn't been holding that rebate card ready to spend it. It's actually a genius marketing plan to promote more retail volume movement, which is what makes the profit. It's the scheme used on men that is used on women by Kohls. Markup the price, offer a % off sale and everyone pours in the doors. Train them to never pay full retail and they'll always come to you for your sales.

Clicker is right. 11% off doesnt effect me one way or another. Lots off folks dont send there rebates in. If you get a rebate send it in the same day because you will forget it otherwise. Studies have shown that. Really just makes you spend more then you need too. Buy things you dont need. Why not take 11% off at the cash register. Pretty easy to do an you will always be ahead. More money for Menards. I like how my local farm store does it. They have a certain percentage on most things not everyhting. They take it off at the cash register an your out off there with your purchase. They do that several times a year. Menards is alright but I try an do business with my local lumber yard if possible. At least I can talk to somebody there an get some help an recommendations on what I need. In Menards your on your own. Nobody knows anything. If Im close to one I will buy things there regardless off rebates. Just get what I need. Rebates are a cash cow for stores. Most dont send them in. So if you go in to Menards on one off those sales. Make sure you send the rebate in before the end off the day. Otherwise you wont do it. I think women are better then men on rebates. Us men we dont like coupons or rebates.

Can you imagine if your local implement dealer would have sale an and 11% off on parts. An then you had to send a rebate in. People would be so mad. But if Menards does it its alright. No they usually take it off before you leave the store. Implement stores no better.

Clicker, you are dead on and have it figured out too.
I had to chuckle when you mentioned Kohls, although we like their merchandise, I can tell when the daughter and wife head to town, I can just about bet that there will be a Kohls bag in the Expedition, either a return, or something new.
I always laugh about the "scratchies" or lotto tickets is what I call them, when they give you these coupons either during store specials or in the mail, that you have to rub off to see how much discount you get.
It did not take my son long to learn to pack Tractor House, and Fastline, some munchies and drink so we can sit in the car with the tunes cranked up while they shop, when we HAVE to go to ;-).

Built a 30x40 three car garage in 14 got everything but the vinyl siding from the local lumber yard, they delivered no charge brought out what I needed when I needed it and gave me a good discount if I paid with a week and the lumber quality was way above anything you can get at Menards

We are building a house and have been buying SELECT items there during the rebate. Electrical supplies was one, plywood and subfloor adhesive was another.

The electrical supplies were fine but the plywood delaminated and the adhesive was old and didn't bond. Gotta be careful what you buy there.

As to lumber quality. Years ago I was building a few wood feed bunks so needed 2 x 12, 2 X 10 And treated 4 X 6.

Bought some from the local lumber yard and it was pure junk,,,crooked cracked from end to end, warped.

Decided Mennards cant be much worse. Bought some and it was straight, true and good to work with. You have to look and each lot will vary a lot. If the place for them are full of somebodies rejects you either have to dig deeper in the pile or ask if they have a new bundle you can tap. If your getting many you get a pic ticket and ask them to bring the whole bundle out back to your truck/trailer and sort all you want. If your getting dozen or less its quicker to wheel them out the front on a 4 bar cart

Mark,

Noticed same thing. Also noticed parking lot and store always busy.

We've done several "projects" and always now wait for the 11%, then buy. We've also been conscious of planning these projects rolling the 11% over. Ex. we use the last 11% rebate to pay on the next project which we also buy when 11% is going on. We put in about $6k of composite fence around backyard and lot lines this past spring/summer as our last project.

Rebate redemption rate in general is <20% I read somewhere- Menards may be different but doubt it as I watched several people with full carts walk out door without going to get the rebate form at customer service- I suspect having the rebate forms at another location is an attempt to lessen the percentage of takers.

My only complaint with Menards is they sometimes have "off" brands and styles- reminds me of shopping at Aldi's sometimes.

"Here" almost never go to Lowes and occasionally Home Depot

1. It's a sale, people come in for sales....

1.a. They don't have to issue new shelf tags and place all those tags through the store these4 weeks, saves on labor and supplies. It's a small amount, but it adds up times how many stores?

2. People forget to mail in the receipts, it's 11% bonus for them everyone who forgets.

3. People forget to use the rebate - again an 11% minus their handling for them.

4. If you have the rebate, you are returning o the store to buy more.... So they get repeat business from you, you gotta come back.

It's a very good business model, with their type of business.

Paul

Here the cost would be 3x of menards if we did that.

I got stuff to build the office in the my barn a few weeks ago. Just getting to the point of needing what I forgot and getting the trailer empty to go for round 2.

Lowes irritates me.

When we were building our house I went on Black Friday weekend as they had a sale plus 11% and we bought 40k worth of stuff, cool thing is when you have a rebate $$$$ there is no sales tax on the rebate money. Also if you use your BIG Card or Contractors card you can get another 1% or so back quarterly.

It's a pain to send the stuff in and remember to use the postcards when they come in. It keeps a guy going into the store.

If you buy tools ect on 11% sale you can deduct the purchase and then buy something nondeductiable with the rebate money.

I also like that I can show my contractors card and just park in the back vrs get my order and have to walk out front to the truck and trailer parked in BFE like at lowes and then pull it up.

Bought the ICF forms for house and garage form Menards during 11% rebate and they were on clearance. If I remember it was around 10-12k. Put it all on my contractor card and get another 4% off between the card and manufacturer rebate. So 15% off in store credit form. Waited until the next 11% sale and bought some bathroom fixtures, nails, screws, etc etc etc. Got the rebate money, rinse, repeat. I should have kept track of all the rebates on the rebates and figured out what I saved in the end.
As for lumber, I have gotten some terrible stuff from Menards when doing small projects. I also sent 1/2 of the lumber back to the local lumberyard because it was too warped and split to use on the house. No big deal they take it back and bring new, but that takes time. Basically all the lumber sucks.

I've been working on a rental house this month in my spare time and have got almost everything from menards. I bought a used dishwasher for $19, kitchen countertop with sink already installed for something like $250. Got some peel and stick floor tiles for about $.8/ square foot, and some laminate snap together flooring for $1.40/ft. All good quality stuff, and the people that work there are competent. The 11% rebate is kind of a scheme, it keeps you coming back in. I forgot to mail one in once that was like $80. I don't think they mark up stuff during their sales, maybe they are hurting for business, I know Home Depot is usually dead.

$1000 purchase would be $110 rebate. Figuring 15 minutes to fill out and mail it in, that is $440/ hour. Even If it took a half hour that's $220/hour.

Seems like a pretty good way to spend time.

The Menards sales receipts have the mail in rebate receipt printed on the bottom of the regular sale receipt, just have to clip it off with scissors, fill out the rebate form and mail the two items in. The past couple weeks they have had separate weekly 11% sales, with the rebates going to the same place so you can combine them in the same envelope and use one stamp. When they receive the combined rebate forms, they total the rebate amounts and send it on one card which saves them postage, too.
Other places that offer rebates like Fleet Farm would print a duplicate receipt but you had to ask for it when you checked out, when I was there a couple weeks ago they automatically printed a second one so maybe they changed the software in their computers.
Its pretty easy to forget to mail the rebate forms in, but you don't get the sale savings if you don't send them in. I hate giving anyone money for no reason other than laziness. I fold the rebate checks and stick them in my checkbook so I remember to use them at the first opportunity.

I agree except for taking 15 minutes to fill out which I know you're just exaggerating. It takes me less then a minute to fill out a form and envolope. I have a ink stamp I use for all of my envelopes with my name and address on it. I use that to stamp their form, stamp my return address on the letter going to WI, write the address on the envelope, cut the bottom part of the receipt that goes to the rebate center and that's it, one minute tops..Now I'll take my "leisure time" of 1 minute to do all of that work to get back a nice in store credit rebate :-).

We have used Menards only a couple times for some large purchases on the 11% sale. First time we got it back fairly quick, this last time it has been a month and their rebate tracker doesn't even show anything about it. Hopefully some info shows up later, over $200 rebate. I know some people never send them in, even me on little things but I wonder how many companies conveniently lose some. I doubt many people can prove they ever send one in, Things my crazy mind wonders about.
