Subject: John Deere 2700 Disc Ripper

Ontario Canada
Just wondering if any of you have a John Deere 2700 Disc Ripper, how do you like it so far, is it ok in sandy and loamy ground, does it plug in heavy corn stalks and what spacing is best 24" or 20" shank spacing, really like to know your thoughts and are there better disc rippers out there, what will chop and bury the residue the best and leave it the smoothest, thanks to any and all replies.

You can't wrong with one of them. I wouldn't trade my for any other ripper out there. There is alot of around here. I have plugged it before, but that was where there was some longer stalks and there were also damp so that don't help matters any.

There is 24' and 30' shank spacing that is made. There is alot of both around here.

Also put a 3 bar drag on the back. That makes alot of difference

We have a 7 shank on 30" spacing and love it. Much better than DMI's we have run in the past that lose parts left and right. I did plug ours a few times this year running at night in frozen chopped stalks. It wanted to plug right around the middle shank because the stalks were frozen together and they would bunch against the inside walking tandem wheels. There are lots of guys running them around me, some chop and some don't. We do just so it goes through the FC better in the spring.

Golden Farms, what brand is that harrow and how do you like it? Got any pics of the finished product running it in that corn ground?

It is Summers harrow. It was well worth the money for it. The drag teeth are 9/16 in thickness and there 24 inches long.

I don't if these pictures do any justice at all. This was the last field I worked for the year and it was getting pretty cold out at the time.

Here are couple more pictures from a field I worked on Nov. 1

That is where I had trouble plugging was right in the middle also. I worked up some CRP with it and that was kind of joke the first time throw and second time it did a pretty good job.

Did you run anything in front of it or is that just how it looks after 1 pass with the 2700? Looks pretty impressive to me.

Back in 2003 at the Kent County Plowing match they had a competition for disk rippers. They dug to find the compaction layer and all machines were set just below it. They had an Unverferth chisel plow, a JD 2700 and a 9709 Salford Wing plow. Each machine ran, then were dug up with a back hoe to check to see how each broke the compaction. The chisel plow did absoutly nothing. You could see the bucket jerk where every shank went. The 2700 did break it up but in large pieces. He said it was still hard digging. The Wing plow smashed it into small marble size pieces. Said it was like digging through sand. The 2700 left the surface rough which could be solved with better harrows. The salford left it smooth enough to plant right into which some guys around Chatham do. You've got a good Salford dealer near by. 2002 Yurke sold 17 Wing Plows. Take a look at them.

Take care,

Nathan

I would like see what they look like now. I looked at one at FarmFest or Big Iron and they looked like JUNK in my eyes. They looked liked they would nightmare down the road to work on.

Look at the new 870 model eclo tiger disc ripper from Case.. Were running a pre production model right now that thing is amazing compared to the 730 B or C model.. It will burry heavy trash and leave the field smooth weather sand or heavy ground. The shank spacing is 12 inches and it has on it 26 inch disc blade

What is different about that from the 730's? I see it has gangs of disks instead of individual ones where the bearings go out of them every week, and the shank spacing is closer, but anything else? Does the closer spacing of shanks make it smoother behind it?
If it doesnt cost over $50,000 we might have to take a look at it.

The shank spacing is closer but the ripper is lengthened out a bit for better trash flow and the leveling colters on the rear are only allowed to move up and down no more sideways movement.. Also it has a rolling basket on the back but the bars on the roller are a reversed 90 degree bar ( < ) to smooth things out and break up the clumbs ..You can't get prices on them yet I was told a couple weeks before the price list are released.. I'll get some pictures and put up here. Oh the nice thing about this model is its a single point depth control no more playing around with cylinder stops on the deepth

Golden< Im assuming you are referring to Salford as being junk? Just curious as to what you saw that you didnt like? We run a Salford wing plow, 7 shank and have had only minor issues with it. When we purchased ours wingplows had only been on the market for a year or so, so I believes ours is one of the first models . Only issue we have had is premature wear of the upper pivot point ( where the hydraulic ram pins too),not sure what the issue was but the hole in the mount went egg shaped after about 3 seasons of use. Salford was aware of this and supplied us with weld in bushings ( harder steel??) that have solved that problem. Beyond that we have had zero issues. As Agcofan pointed out the salford does and exceptional job of breaking up the compaction layer, the only drawback being its takes some serious horsepower to do it .We run 170HP MFD on a 7 leg and it can struggle at times in heavily compacted CLAY soils. Maybe other rippers require the same sort of hp but our only experience is with the salford wingplow. http://www.salfordmachine.com/products/downloadvideo.php?id=10

We tried out the 2700, well built machine, BUT it will not go through our heavy trash, we have had the dealer out here for 2 days and it constantly plugs, dealer has tried everything and has given up till he can talk to Deere, even he is dissapponted along with myself. Our Glencoe 11 shank soilsalver will go though it, its going back to the dealer Monday.

I like the sound of single point depth instead of mixing and matching cylinder stops for it. I would love to see some pics of it in action!

I assume he was maybe looking at the Salford RTS, not the wing plow. I don't think there was a wing plow at FarmFest.
