Subject: Ford L9000 good/bad?

I have a 1991 LN8000 single axle semi currently with the 7.8 liter diesel in it and the 6 speed transmission. I pull a 28 foot hopper for hauling grain in the fall. Short hauls mostly. I like the truck but wouldn't mind having a tandem axle someday. Looks like I would have to go to a L9000 to get a tandem axle?

Just wondered the pros/cons of these trucks?

Engine/transmission options?

Twin screw?

TIA

We had a 1990 L9000, had the 3406 cat B engine with a Easton 13 speed. We had it for about 15 years. Was a great truck, don't really have anything bad to say about it. The only thing it didn't have but wished it did was a Jake brake. If you can find an LTL9000. That's a great truck also, they usually have more power, 425hp, A/C, Jake etc...good luck.

Study up the model number/letters. Captive parts are getting hard to find. Plastic dash tends to break apart and can be hard to fix.

We had a 94 L9000 with 3406B and a 9 speed. Was a great truck but parts got hard to find for the Ford part of the truck. Still have an L8000 tandem dump 3208 and 10 speed. It got a new clutch last year so its probably going to have to stay here awhile to pay for itself. We traded the L9000 for a KW W900 6NZ Cat and 15 speed. More gears are great for farm use. Quad lockers in the back helps get you stuck further too!!

95 L9000 here. 3406C 9 speed. It's a great truck for the money. The only con I can think of is parts but I personally have never had an issue (yet). But agai, it's cheap power so there will be a concession somewhere. I've also heard rust can be a problem but ours was bought clean and is now barn kept and not driven in salt.

Speaking of parts, I've learned with this truck how $$$$$ Cat parts are

Captive Ford parts especially cab parts are hard to find, great trucks 20 years ago. We still have a 88 LT 8000 dump truck a new door latch was going to be $300 we fixed our old one. Power train and most other parts are common to other brands and are reasonably priced. Our semis and other tandem are KWs , I really like that brand.

That is a nice looking truck! How many miles does it have on it?
