What are your opinions on this tractor? I've always been a CaseIH driver and have never even sat in the seat of JD, let alone drive one. A friend has it for sale and looking at buying it. Does this model have a good or bad history?

John Deere 7810 tractor, MFWD. 6631 hours, 2002. 170 HP, power quad, 20 speed, 26 mph, 1000/540 PTO, 3 SCVS. Rear wiper. Inner rear wheel 450 lbs. weights, 8 front weights. Rear tires 18.4 x 42 with duals. 70% grip on tires. Front fenders, buddy seat, extension mirrors, air seat, cab air/heat, radio, dif lock. CAT 3 N with quick hitch, hammer strap

The 10 series were the last decent tractors JD built. Everything from then on has been plastic hooded Tonka toys. That 66xx hr tractor has another 10xxx left in it before any major work needed. Jon

One of Deere better tractors . Looks too be well equipped. If your red tractors are 15 years old also I think you'll be happy. It's not new but nice... Dennis

Best all around tractor JD has ever built. We have two that I think will prolly just die on the farm cause we can't find anything to replace them. Both 10k plus hours, never had a serious issue with them they just plain work like a tractor should.

I'm a red guy too. But those are pretty darn good tractors, except for the ride. The roughest, most uncomfortable (modern) tractor I've driven. The way it bucks around fore/aft and side to side is awful. I'd go with a Magnum myself, but I'm also biased.

Great tractor, we have two and they are refined and dependable. Never had an issue with either and they get worked doing loader and hay duties. One of them will be a permanent tractor on this farm, and will just get rebuilt when needed.

Make sure you've got the seat adjusted correctly. My 7700 seat ruined a cable that adjusted ride firmness and it did ride like a log wagon on steel. Fixed that and put new bushing/bearing kit in the seat and all is well!

If it wasn't doing something else the 7810 was put on the PT sprayer before I got a SP because it rode the best out of the fleet. I also don't understand the hysteria over the magnums since they might be well built but seemed pretty crude for what else was out at the same time, especially later on. But everyone has their opinions.

OP I don't plan on selling my 7810 any time soon either. Its been a very good tractor other than a few minor repairs. Its a little big tractor. big enough to get something done but small enough to do some odd job like rake hay or something.

I agree with them being a great big/little tractor. Lots of power packed (8.1L engine from the 8000 series) into a smaller frame. The one you found has the 20 sq quad which is the best trans for that tractor IMO. We use ours to pull a 16/31 kinze, mow waterways and other odd jobs in the summer, mount a 740 loader on it in the winter to push snow and pulls wagons from the field in the fall - 2-544 brents hooked together. Great do-it-all tractors.

Do you have much for hills? Also do you have it weighted up? I've got a 3600 16/30 and can't imagine the 7810 pulling that easily. I've got a couple of hills the NH Genesis I have struggle with it, but it would be nice to be able to run the planter with the 7810.

Running one set of 450 lb wheel weights on the inside of the rear wheels. Otherwise no weights on it. Engine was turned up to 200 hp (checked on dyno) but I only run it about 3/4 throttle.

As far as hills - we are in NC IA so its mostly rolling hills to flat. Only have one farm with steeper hills, doesn't seem to bother it.

You'll love it. Mine has been a great tractor, just routine maintenance.

I have '97 7810 MFWD Power shift. 3500 hours. Good engine. Good torque at lower rpm and starts easy as all 8.1s do. Other than updating the mfwd seals no issues. Have to be careful it is fully stopped before putting in park or that can do some expensive damage. Not sure that is the case with the quad range though.

Also have 8110 same hp on dyno. The 8110 will out pull and run faster due to the gearing in the mfwd hubs. Axles are also heavier on 8110. Turning radius not as tight on the 7810 because of the fenders and how they are mounted.

Don't think you would go wrong by getting it.

+1 Always looking for another one. 14k hours on the one we have with no major repairs. Runs like it has 4k hours.

When the PS tractors get some wear in the linkage, sometimes they will still be in first gear when the shift lever is placed in Park. That has cracked transmission housings. PQ transmissions have a different shifting mechanism which eliminates that issue.

I pulled a John Deere 16/30 1770NT with a 600 gallon fertilizer tank, back in the day with our 7810, worked great but needed a lot of front end weights as the NT with fertilizer puts a lot of weight on back of tractor cause its mounted on 3 point.
