Coons killing my wifes cats. She went out tonight and seen momma and 5 babies in shop looking to score. She puts all the cat food up at dark and sets trap. Whats the bait you guys use with Coke that is so potent? Does it kill cats too?

Cup of fly bait and about a liter of Coke in a rubber pan, just be sure to look under machinery that sits for awhile they start to stink pretty quick in this weather.

Yup, I put the fly bait in the middle of the pan then pour the Coke over it, they like regular coke not diet, and they don't like flat pop either, had a half bottle that sat in the shed all winter, tried that this spring and they wouldn't even touch it, poured in some fresh and they slurped it right up

Lead pills work great. Took out 7 last night.

Our problem is the deer are eating the TASSELS out of the sweet corn. The coons won't even have a chance to ruin it.

jimjr are you using the blue golden malrin or some of the old yellow stuff? I have the blue and it doesn't seem to kill anything, the old yellow stuff was very good but can't get it here anymore.

I've had good luck with the dog proof traps baited with small marshmallows. I've had success with large live traps as well. I've heard that the Golden Maldrin cocktails don't work as well as they did in the past since the Government forced the potency to be reduced.

The dog proof traps require that the animal to be caught place their paws within the trap. Dogs cannot do this so they are spared. My dog proof traps even came with a small cap that went above the bait as a further safety issue for pets. This cap had a ring on it so the coon could lift up the cap and remove it before placing its paw down in the trap. Since I don't have any pets to be worried about, I didn't bother to use the caps.

A neighbor who raises sweet corn for direct sales advised these traps. He said to be certain to get good quality ones with a double swivel and stake them down well. This prevents the coon from twisting the chain until it or the coon's paw is destroyed. They are not very happy when you come upon them in the trap. A well placed .22 at a safe distance works well.

I noticed yesterday while working in the storage end of my shed that a coon had used a used disk blade lying flat on the ground as a toilet so I should dig out the traps again.

Tie a rope to your live trap and drop it in a full water barrel. Amazing how fast you can drown a squirrel or a coon when you "take em swimmin " as my elderly neighbor lady once told me!

This depends on what type of live trap you have. The ones that gravity holds the bars down, might "give enough" to allow a very angry coon to pop back out of there. The spring latch traps would work ok, with the barrel swim.

West Central MN (between MMF and Larson's)
I got a live trap on Fathers Day and in 10 Days after I set it up and I got 8 Coons using 5 large Marshmallows as bait. Almost got a 2 fer one morning as one was on top of the trap trying to help his body get out. I think I clipped that one with the Golden Boy but it still ran off.

Has now been 3 strait days without one. SO maybe they are thinned enough. They were getting just a little to comfortable around the house before getting the trap.

If you hit him. He shouldn't be far off. Had a time once when I just hit each one with a single .22 round. Reloaded 10 rd clip and emptied again. That winter I found piles of bones in the brush out back. Yeah, we had a bad coon problem.

I would think so Boone, you would have to sweeten it though because they changed the formulations to make them less desirable to animals.
