Southern Illinois
Getting ready to spray Halex GT on corn for the first time and was looking for some tips/pointers. I have seen a number of fields with what looks like bleaching from Callisto (or generic) in the past couple days and was wondering if any one has tips to avoid this. Looking for any advice on time of day to spray, gallons/acre, nozzle type, temperature, sun/no sun, etc. We have always in the past used a pre-emerge but I am trying to diversify my chemical applications and prevent using the same AI's year over year and on multiple crops.

We've used Halex GT for seven seasons or so and never had a problem until this year. We usually went over the corn at V5-V6. This year we went over at V4 and had lots of injury, especially in one variety, DKC 62-08. We normally use AMS but didn't this year because what weeds we had were small and they were very prevalent. I believe that had some to do with our injury, and was a bonehead move on my part. We also used Grounded from Helena as a deposition agent because we had some wind but we were spraying near a lot of cotton acres and houses and didn't want to chance any drift.

Anyways, the crop looked awful for a week or so and we had Helena, Syngenta, and Monsanto reps take a look and two specialists from LSU. The LSU weed scientist replicated my tank mix on some plots and the Grounded was causing the burn on that one variety. We also had 1lb of Atra in the tank.

Other than that we've had great luck with the product, but it did scare me this year. We luckily only sprayed 1/3rd of acres before we noticed the burn and we switched to RU, Atra, and Zidua on some acres and RU, Atra, and Capreno on others. We will see how the compare.

We do 10gl work and Turbo XL AI tips. We haven't seen any difference in product activity in reference to time of day and other environmental conditions. Just make sure you tank mix partners are compatible and keep agitation up. I wouldn't let it sit up over night. We also agitate the bulk tanks for a few minutes everytime before the mix our loads. That stuff is pretty thick.

1st pic was applied in the same pass. Flag is a variety change. Terral REV 23BHR55 on the left and DKC 62-08SS on right.

2nd pic is where finished spraying one evening before a rain. The foreground was treated and the background had not been sprayed. I believe both pics were 7 days post treatment. 2nd pic is also 62-08

Only time I had issues was the first few hundred feet after the Halex sat in the boom a few days. This was a custom field, checked in the fall with a weigh wagon because it looked worse all year. If I remember right it did like 14bpa better.. explain that.

Adding a 1/2 lb of atrazine gives the Halex GT a extra punch on controlling weeds. It has a synergistic effect.
I've used Halex GT since it was released and never had it fail or cause crop injury that resulted in yield loss. I can't say the same about the pre-emerge herbicides I use to apply before Halex GTs release. Going to one post application of Halex GT drastically simplified our farming operation.

If spraying after a cold spell wait 2 days of warmer weather so corn can start to get back on its feet from the cool weather and metabolize the Halex. If using a product such as Interlock for a deposition aid use no more than 2fl/oz per acre which is 1/2 of their recommended rate of 4 fl/oz. Bleaching is cosmetic and if you count collars on bleached corn with unbleached and go back 1 week later both will grow at similar rates. End of the day you should have a very clean field at harvest.
