| Went to the sale today and watched a guy sell two loads of 9wt late cut steers. They were pretty good calves, but were in absolutely perfect flesh. My jaw dropped, one calf after another, every one of them in perfect condition. I asked the guy how long he had been feeding them and he said 90 days. He told me he fed them distillers syrup free choice. I live in the land of whiskey distilleries, so syrup is real cheap here. He told me it used to cost him about 5-7000 to feed a load of calves for 60-90 days, now his feed costs are less than half that. What's everyone's option on free choice syrup, with a roll of hay left out and plenty of pasture. Seems like everyone has a different opinion on the syrup, but after seeing those cattle today I think I am a believer. |

all over Iowa | If I knew they had free choice syrup, I'd hesitate to bid on them. I've seen too many health problems related to trace mineral imbalances on free choice syrup. They can look great now and have problems later.

south west iowa | We feed syrup made from corn to every thing and have for at least 10 to 15 years. Never have had any trouble but we feed a mineral balancer with it. The cows get free choice syrup on grass and on corn stalks. Never been around the syrup made from the whiskey.

Can you explain it more please? |

all over Iowa | Syrup tends to be high in sulfur, which can bind with trace minerals and make them unavailable. Trace minerals are essential for proper health and reproduction. A balancer doesn't help this, unless it is high in chelated trace minerals. The problem isn't the syrup, it's free choice feeding the syrup. Some people get along fine - I get the call when some one is having problems and I see more problems when free choice syrup is offered. |

sw MN | Have you seen issues when syrup is fed in a tmr?
Is thymine the only trace mineral it effects? |

| We have been feeding corn syrup for a few years now and we recently noticed the oils was separating from the syrup. Does it have any effect on cattle when they drink it this way? |
