ND | This is a first for me and hopefully my last.
This thing was born this morning, believe it or not she had it on her own.

SW So Dakota | I've never had one but my friend had 2 in one year. Very rare. |
ND | Another genetic defect maybe but the neighbor had one last year and he raises registered simmental. |
northeast iowa | I would not like to see that in the pasture kinda creepy
North Central Texas | Older cow? |
53590 | I'll quote my father "The hundreds of thousands of calves dairy or beef born every day week month or year there has to be a few that don't work out" It is kind of crazy how few are born with "issues" |
Ontario's Middle East | I had one about 15 years ago. Very creepy indeed. Had a hiefer that wasn't making any progress so I investigated and held a beating heart in my hand. Called vet and did a c-section. The vet said it was her second in 15 years of practise. |

Never heard this. My research says it's a genetic defect:

North Central Texas | I think 99% of the time they are 5 or younger. Well the good part is your chances of seeing it again should be low and she is still alive. |
ND | Wonder why in young cows coincidence.
She is alive doesn't feel to good though. If she is alive tomorrow she will get a calf to raise, we have a pen full of pail calves.
My favorite little helper !

NE MO | Had one just like that 2 years ago... unfortunately had to pull it and the cow went down and never did make it back up...13 year old cow and I thought might have had something to do with it... ??? don't know. |

Faunsdale, AL | I doubt the claim that it is genetic or at least that it is a heritable genetic condition.
Many heritable conditions are rare except among populations of related individuals that carry the genes. Schistosomas reflexus is rare in every population but is still seen in every breed and crossbred cattle as well.
The basic defect is the body wall does not close along the ventral midline. As far as the claim that it will be a younger cow that has one, a lot more younger cows have calves than old ones, so that should skew the results a little! |

North Central Texas | Very true on all your statements. I expect that many of the births that are actually seen are dairy reducing the age. |
Eastern Ohio | Neighbor had one last week |
| I had one 4 yrs ago from a 11 yr old cow. Vet had to cut it up inside ,He said very rare for beef breeds but more common in Holsteins. He also said it is nothing she ate & is not genetic, just an accident of nature. |

https://www.icbf.com/wp/?page_id=4578 ive not done any "research". My dvm tiold me that when dad had one 20-30 years ago. He could have been wrong, I could be remembering wrong, or "science" could have changed on 25 years. Just what I remember. |

Dunnell Minnesota | Looks like it was born butt first ?
mn | I had the identical looking calf this year also. Every thing is the same as you describe except my cow never missed a beat. Its just crazy how exact that picture is compared to mine. |

![](/profile/get-photo.asp?memberid=37469&type=profile&rnd=777) Northcentral Kansas | I had my first one this year. Looked exactly like yours. Reached in a felt 4 legs and one head. Vet had to do a C section. My vet has been around for along time and he had only seen one other. |
Ft. Ripley MN | We had one last year, had to pull it out. The cow was fine. Brought it to the vets and they had no reasoning behind why it happens. It's the weirdest thing to see one. |
