North East Iowa

Scheduled for next week the boys from John Deere want to put there 568 up against our Vermeer 605 Super M Cornstalk Special. Should be a good race, Vermeer has made quite a few improvements on the Super M model and its very impressive to watch gobble up stalks.

Will there be lots of youtube videos to cover the race?  I'll lay my money on the Vermeer.

I was just reading an add tonight, looks like vemeer added a hyd roller or something like that, that would be nice, wish deere's was powered.
We ran a used 605m against a used 567 two years ago, deere smoked the Vermeer, then they dealer realised he should have put new teeth in (too late now). Back then I heard about Vermeers having a lot of bearing problems, but haven't heard much lately deere definately has bearing problems on the pickup also!! let us know how it turns out, should be a fun time for you.

There have been a ton of corn stalk bales made up in this area the past couple days, guys trying to beat the rain/snow. I wouldn't be surprised if they've been running around the clock, the liquid manure guys have been.

Used for bedding and feed. Lots of cattle feeders feed tub ground corn stalks mixed with ethanol byproducts.

I would so much like to hear the outcome of this test. About 6 or so years ago i put my JD 566 up against a 8465 CIH and my machine did circles around the CIH. Oddly enough CaseIH equiptment is usually my pick but i learned in hay my JD beats all in the area, when it cames down to time spent in the field, hay or cornstalks. JD put that roller on their new 568's which doesn't exactly impress me in alfalfa but is supposed to kick A** in corn stalks. As for myself, i haven't got a chance to try it yet. Damn crappy weather. A huge factor in baling cornstalks is how its cut/chopped. When i was up against the CIH machine they were windrowed. After that I raked them, and still could haul A**, but when i bought my new Loftness windrower shredder it takes a little more time. The feedlots don't like it that way as much either because you don't get the corn in the bale like the windrower or rake. But raking really ruins a rake and i started to wonder where all those foot long tines were going.... I myself bale to sell mostly to feedlots, they seem to love them, and for the money i do too. All the sudden though farm publicaitons are starting to fill me in on what that takes away from the ground and its a bit scary. I hope to hear back on the vermeer vs. JD test though. I doubt i will change but it might be tempting. They all will bale cornstalks but that time of year, just like the regular hay season, time is important.... GOOD LUCK.

*Also I use them for my own cow heard for bedding usually but its a funny thing since i started using that shredder, they seem to eat most of the bale other than laying on them, and i feed my cows well. It didn't make much sense.

If i understan it you got a 568, I really like the way it bales, in a good field i can average 60 bales an hour. But you better have spare cam and bearings on hand My last pair only lasted 1800 bales.

Thats what alot of people say, but i have never had a problem with any JD baler i have had. I wonder why alot of guys have problems with those cam bearings and i don't? Field Conditions??? I put 3500-5000 on a baler a year. I have gotten to the point i just trade every year. That way a dealer has to worry about fixing stuff. I have noticed though the new one i got this year was really rusty and I have had some bearings go out. It was almost like it sat in about 3 foot of water before i got it.

I had a new 567 that I put 3 of the cams on in 10k bales. The bearings didn't go out but after the cam wears thin and breaks through than it bends your arms and ruins your cam bearings basically. We had a 535 and never put a cam in it over 10k bales. I just traded for a 568 so I hope it's better but I'm not expecting it to be.

I wander if they cheapen them down, this is my 3rd fall with this balerfirst 2 years i never had a problem, but last year other were having quite a bit of problems with newer balers so I put in new bearings to be safe, went through 2 cams since then.
