Does anybody know if there is a paint stencil kit for this paint scheme on a kenworth w900?
My kenworth dealer is of no help!
Is there a name of this design?
Thanks

Guy that painted mine said they just tape it off like he did at the factory. Anyone ever tour the plant? Is that true?

I figured the name out.....called Olympic
Now, how the heck do you get that painted on each side identical!? Lol
I find it hard to believe that every truck from factory with these paint schemes are individually measured and taped off with masking tape!? Would be way to slow and labor costly.
Has to be a stencil kit somewhere available!?

Yep, it is a lot of extra work. That's why peterbilt only offers 2 colors per each truck. (Frame excluded, but they still charge dearly for a frame painted anything but black). The one company they make an exception for is in and out burger in CA. Most of the stripe paint jobs are done at the dealer now. Cause for each color, it's another trip through the paint booth, and taking another place for production. My 1978 peterbilt has 5 colors. My 389 has a sort of version of Winslow stripes, and was done by allstate peterbilt. I noticed that it looks like the truck in your picture is at truckworx in Alabama? I've seen some of the trucks they sell, and they seem to sell some nice old school paint schemes. A while back they had a brand new w9 with an Apache paint scheme done in green, so it looked like the moving on truck. Kenworth is doing some cool paint jobs on the icon 900s too. I think peterbilt called that paint scheme power something. A guy just restored a 359 with that paint in large car magazine within the last year. I know everybody uses the Seminole paint scheme, but I think it belongs on kws.

I was always told this style was called Seminole, but according to the picture it looks a lot like the Aztec.

My opinion only, but the painting on the hood looks like it is going up hill.  Stuff like that really bothers me, it's not really following the lines of the truck or the hood!

Layout one side the way you want it, use a grease pencil to draw on the paint as is for a guideline for tape. Use 3M fineline striping tape for clean edges.
PPG wax and grease remover will EASILY wipe off grease pencil marks.
After you have it taped, then use wide 3M body mask paper or brown craft paper, cover your taped layout with it, mask tape it in place to temporarily secure, then use a dark colored kids crayon, peel off the paper cover and then go over the tape edges with the side of crayon using light pressure. This will leave a dark edge from the tape edge. Now remove the mask paper, and cut out your edges, flip it over / reverse and the colored side to paint of other side of vehicle , tape to secure in proper placement, use grease pencil to trace, then tape off the other side, with the 3M fineline and then mask from there.

You will only need to do this where all the curves and scallops are, the front 1/3 or so, the rest are straight lines and can be measured out, and should be able to match up and help to align when moving the original template to other side.

Does this take time...yes, but beats doing both sides from scratch.

Great idea!!!! Thanks!!!!

I really like that Pete of yours paint scheme. I think I see a clean idle sticker, so it's fairly new?

One outfit who hauls a lot of hay out of here has a couple new trucks running around with a neat 'old school' paint scheme. I think they are the nicest looking trucks out of the fleet... and that saying a lot since they run a few hundred trucks. Only pictures I have are not great, but you get the idea. Of course, the old flames paint scheme looked pretty nice too.

Thanks, yeah she's a 2016. Which being from California, you probably know that a flat top 389 is only technically legal now if it's 2014 or newer. 08-13 trucks are supposed to be EPA smart way certified.... I get asked pretty often what year the "old" peterbilt is, which is just how I like it! I put off replacing my 379 until they were somewhat getting the bugs out of the new ones. I need to be able to run Cali as I can get good freight in the winter. I run really hard in the winter and summer, pretty busy farming and drain tiling in the spring and the fall. Im 39, so I grew up loving stripes and stacks and small bunks. I don't know if you know remember the truck em up posters from the 70s? I was obsessed with peterbilts as a kid, and mom and dad bought me the picture to put above my bed. I know the fleet you have the pictures of, I really like the look. I went to California the first time in '99. It's really a good thing the speed limit is 55, cause I wasn't paying very good attention to the road, cause I was looking at all the old trucks, especially the cabovers! You guys on the west coast always had excellent taste in trucks. After all, peterbilt, kenworth, and freightliner all came from California and the Pacific Northwest! I'm from just east of Minneapolis st Paul MN. All the coolest trucks back when I was a kid was the west coast produce haulers. The trucks that ran east were very restricted from length laws.

I don't worry about both sides matching exactly. If you can see both sides at the same time you are having bigger troubles than the paint job.

It takes a lot of time and prep to make it look good. Big challenge is to get it all taped off.

Here is some that we have done over the years.

There are still quite a few older trucks running in CA. I don't know exactly the status of how that all works with emissions regulations... but I see a fair number of 362's and even some Freightliner cabovers, the pre-Argosy square ones. The cabover truck and trailers have always been the best hay setup to run in the mountains in the snow. When word got out in the early 2000's that Pete was going to quit making them quite a few guys bought some new ones.

Here's a setup for you, wish I'd have taken a picture when they were complete. But it is a pair of brand new 389's, with sleepers, single screws. And the best part is that is a single turbo C-15 sitting in it.

Anytime...my email is good too in my profile.

I 'll look in my old printed off photos, and see if I have any when I used to stripe the Ford Louisvilles, I think mom may have some photos of me working / painting trucks when I was in high school and college, long time ago.... :-).

I used to do a lot of hand lettering and some scroll work / pinstriping, I really have gotten rusty ( and lazier ), since I got my vinyl cutter years ago.

Also used to get into some body repair jobs where a front fender / hood would need redone, then try and have to match things up, this was my best foolproof way that I could come up with.

I tried an old school overhead projector too....that worked...but a lot of screwing around !!!!

Another idea...is to do a wrap. Check with some local sign shops that specialize in vehicle wraps. Some of the better shops can do a nice job fairly reasonable.
It just depends on what YOU want...myself I like the old school painted stripes, then clear and sand the edges smooth and clear again.

That's a great thought.....I never have the wrap idea a thought! Might be the best and cheapest alternative!
Will have to check into that!
Thanks again
