Subject: cost to put up grain bin?

west central ohio
Just had a wild thought this afternoon, our family has been for multiple generations, and never had on farm grain storage. So what is the approximate cost to put up a 10,000 bu grain bin? Concrete here is about $110 per yard, and i suppose that I will want a fan with heat. Do you think a 10000 bu will have a reasonable return? or do you need a monster to make it pencil out? Thanks.

With power sweep, incline unloader, motors, electrical, grading, etc; turn key you are probably looking at close to $3 a bushel for a 10,000 bushel bin. "Here" brock narrow (32" ring) bins have always been cheaper. A lot of my neighbors have 7 ring bins of different diameters, and I always put up 9 ring bins. Once you pay for the floor, roof, unloader, motors, wiring, grading; the extra two rings will cost pennies per bushel.

i was quoted about $13k US for an 11k bu bin. the concrete and labour was another $16k Canadian. unaffordable for me so never got far enough to find out how much the ground prep and electrical would have cost. looked like it would have cost in the area of $4 per bushel by the time everything was done

Put up a used 8 ring 30' Brock bin last year for 1.65 a bu that was for concrete, 10 hp centrifugal fan, 8 in unload, power spinner and a bin sweep. No heat or electric. I would put up at least a 30' bin wider the better.

10k bin holds 50 acres of decent corn. Corn yields are probably not going down. 25k bushel bin would be a nice size and cheaper per bushel. You can still hit it with a 10x71 auger. Let us know what you wind up doing and take pictures.

p.s. Even on a 36ft bin doing the concrete yourself is not insurmountable. Rebar. And you can save big $$$ by doing it. Use twice the rebar you think you need, make sure your outer 3 ft of the pad is down below frost line and it will be there for many years. Rebar. Did I mention rebar? Should be able to get down to 1.60 to 1.80 bushel including electric.

WAYNE I would encourage you to visit Market Talk page and the thread: "After reading the thread below "will bins pay" on 12/6/16 (I would link if I knew how)
Our family farm goes back to 1836, when I started my career there in 1980, we had little more than 20,000 bu. storage (stored NO corn at home) Today.... we have one bin (corn) that holds 103500 bu. 24 rings high, (It's cheaper to go up than out) and over 140000 bu. total storage. For us .... the bins have paid, not even considering convenience at harvest time. The corn bin helped me pocket an extra .20 before it was even built (selling the carry that year) on bushels that otherwise would have been delivered at harvest with out it. Gained on basis too, don't recall how much though. My opinion ... all bins can pay, regardless of size. (still have three 2500 bu. ones) DO NOT use them just to hold grain, they are a marketing tool !! Catch the carry and work the basis.
As for the cost, always been my experience the bigger you go (up or out) the cheaper per bu. it gets. Don't let a "small bin" by todays standards stop you from building it, next phase of our plan (whenever / if ever we get there) will be turning our systems first bin into wet holding for corn.
Would encourage you to think "long term" on a from scratch system too. PLAN a big system before the first bin is even built, whole lot easier to move bins and a storage system around on graph paper than when it's steel and concrete. I never DREAMED I would be handling the bushels I do today 30 years ago..... but sure glad today that my bin building / boss made me think about it.

Things are truly different in other parts of the country. Size of your operation and cash on hand is very big too. I have tried to justify storage here for 30 years. About 5 out of the 30 years it would pencil out. Yesterday I went through the numbers again. We got 4.06 avg/bu. for our corn at the mill (50 miles one way) Yesterdays price at the same mill was 4.25. With a difference of .19 there is no way to put storage up for that difference. I priced a 10,000 bu GSI bin a few years ago and it was 50,000 complete with drying fan, stirrer etc.that included pad and electrical hook up. That would be 5.00 a bu. or $1.00/bu. over a 5 year period if you pay cash with no interest. Then add electric and gas to dry and a second handling with augers and your time. you in no way can justify that here. We couldn't even justify a used bin for corn. I look at storage as a quick way to get harvesting done. We did find that at least this year we could justify a bin for beans but not a new bin. With all that being said would I like to have a bin - oh yes It would cut out driving 200 miles everyday at harvest I do wish it was the first thing I did when I started 30 years ago so if you can swing it do it but do it right.

It was much easier to make it pencil out back when bins were not so expensive. The last one i put up was going to take forever to pencil out on paper but it pays for itself in other ways. You are not forced to take harvest price. You can book your storage quantity for any month. The number one reason for me would be timely harvest. You can harvest it earlier with bins and for me you can get more acres done in a day. It is very frustrating sitting in the field waiting for trucks that are supposed to be coming that never show up and you watch the weather and a hurricane is spinning up in the Gulf Of Mexico or you have days of thunderstorms forecasted and you know with every storm more is going to be laying on the ground. My 2 cents for what it is worth:) Also get the biggest one you can afford.

We have built enough storage over the years to store all of our harvest for many of the same reasons others have replied to already – biggest one is your own bin site is open 24/7 at harvest – elevator is not. We have bought new as well as used bins and found benefits to both. No work but more money for all new, more work and less money for used – if you get bought right. The good used bins we have put up are about 50-60% of the cost of new. I am sure you can find good used bins in the size you are talking if you are willing to do some work it will save you money. Either way build bigger than you think you need, the last new bin we bought in the winter and were wishing we had gone 6’ wider and 2 rings taller by the time they put it up in the summer!!! Email is in profile if you have any questions or want more "advise"!!
