Got a bunch of hedge posts cheap. They've been cut and stacked 5 years or so. What's my best plan to get woven wire staples to them? Last time I put wire on old hedge posts I drilled pilot holes, but that was tedious and hard on drill bits.

After you put in the staple we will always put a #9 wire around the wire and post to help keep the staple in.

My father in law always spit on them so they would go in easier, I carry a little oil.

From my experience, staples in hedge posts only work when the posts are fresh cut. I had some older posts that I had to drill pilot holes in so I could use staples. 8 or so years later after the deer had jumped it or tried and got hung up a lot of my staples are gone. I went over it and used 12 gauge soft wire and just wired them on. You can also use a chain saw to cut a shallow cut in the post for the wire to lay in then wire it from the back. I have tried that and decided it was too much work. I just stretch the wires very tight and hold them in place with just the wire.

Forget the staples, use a metal cutting twist drill, (the wood twist drills don't seem to work) run a wire through the hole and around the post.

In woven wire you could just do the top one & wire around the post on the lower ones.

We use 1 1/4 deck screws and conduit clamps. As far as I'm concerned no other way. Staples will pop off after a period of time, wire will get pushed down and up and I couldn't imagine drilling holes all the way through them for every wire.

Where do you get staples that don't bend on the second hit? I can drive hardened nails in for porcelain insulators no problem, but the soft staples just turn to pretzels.

Find yourself a machine tool tooling sales place and ask for screw machine drill bit in the size you want . They are shorter than a regular drill bit so then won't flex as much likely lasting longer. Warning - - - you won't get them real cheap but by the 10 pack they shouldn't be too bad. If getting dull is part of the issue then you're looking for the same as a cobalt screw machine drill bit. Yes, you could try carbide drill bits and the will drill a lot more holes, but they are very unforgiving in their need for rigidity. If there is any side pressure on them they will shatter and they be pricey so you would be swearing quick if they're breaking in short order.

Yell at me on here if you need more explanation. If I can find where you're at I could possibly look for the kind of supplier I'm talking about in your area.

Grandpa gets them for me by the pound from the Mennonites, he calls them hedge steples!? They are short only about an inch to the top of the arch and about 1/2 space between the legs. Use a 16 oz hammer because I always hit my finger and thumbs to drive them. Have to check yearly and replace as needed. Have a few stretches that are fifty years plus.

Now what I have been doing is replacing these stretches with hi tensile. I set hedge corners and braces and set a hedge post every hundred feet or more depending on terrain. In between I set fiberglass posts, on the hedge the three middle wires are hot so I use the plastic nail on insulators and use 1 1/2 inch blue concrete screws. On the bottom and top wires I staple the wire with the same hedge steples.

here is what we do, drill a hole a bit less than 1/4 then get 1/4 lag I screws put into hedge post open the eye install wire close up, now you have a electric capable fence that is about as permanent as it gets.

While your setting in your chair at night watching tv use a pair of pliers to squeeze the staple closed a little so legs are parallel to each other and they wont spread as easy driving them in

Go to Home Depot, and get some Plumbers Tape. Take a pair of tin snips, and cut in in 3 hole lengths, fold them in half, and use a 1 1/4 inch torx screw thru the two holes( they will line up) into the post. You cut a bunch at home watching TV at night, and be ready to go, and its cheap. They also make these if need to hold wire down with a lot of pressure http://www.bigheelfasteners.com/

Run shorter staples. The long ones work on hedge trees.

Stock-ade and freeman both make pneumatic staplers (9 gauge up to 2 inches).

Local guy has one and says the stockade will drive into anything
