SW Minnesota | I have a 1979 Ford L700 single axle truck with an 18' grain box on it. It still has the usual 20" split rims on it with 9.00 tires on Dayton wheels that most trucks of this vintage were equipped with. Since it is getting very hard to find tires for it anymore, I purchased a set of 22.5 rims that will fit on the Dayton spoke center but still need to find the correct tire size to put on them.
So that is my question - what radial tire size would be the closest to the original 9.00 x 20 tires? The replacement 22.5" tires will have to be roughly the same height (plus or minus and inch or two) and also since they are radials, they cannot be too wide and touch "cheek to cheek" when under load.

Columbia Basin, Ephrata, WA | A 22.5 lo pro like a 275/80R22.5 or 295/75r22.5 should be awfully close of not the same size as the old 9.00-20. Maybe go with the 275 if you're worried about the sidewalls touching.

295/75/22.5 is the same as a 10-20
No, 10-20 is the same OD as an 11r22.5. The LP tires are a little smaller.

Central Sask. RM#254, Canada | The changeover Dayton rims from 10.00x20 to 11R22.5 are only $100.oo brand New , Narrower ones for the 9.00 are likely the same $ . Borrow one with an 11R tire on it and see if you can go up the one size for clearance ; There are lots of decent used 11R22.5 tires around if you don't mind them not all looking exactly matching . Then you will legally carry more weight .. |

Eastern Half of Kansas | 10r22.5 would be height and width replacement. Those would go on a 7.5x22.5 wheel.
You could also, put on the sizes Big Ben mentions, 275 and 295, those are the same height as your originals, a little wider. You shouldn't need a wider spacer on the back axle. Those would ideally go on a 8.25x22.5 wheel.
Used wheels unpainted up from junk yard are $40-50 for others asking.

I got my rims at Erickson Truck Salvage near Jackson, MN. They were good used ones. |

missouri | i put 255-80-22.5 on in place of 9.00-20's and the new metrics are maybe 1 inch shorter which was fine in my case so i have a slower 1st and reverse and a little more power. |

NE ND | Luckens in Winger, MN sells used rims like this for $40. I've done many. Yes, 10R22.5 is correct. Specs listed above sound right.
