Subject: Fall strip till and corn micros?

NNY
We are seriously thinking of going the strip tii route in the next few years. Presently we broadcast 18-42-72 with sulfur, boron and zinc in the spring b4 planting. We also use pop up and 2 x 2 with small amounts of micros added in the liquid. Thinking of deep banding p & k when strip tilling. Not sure if we can add micros to the band, as some will leach b4 spring. Wondering how others are getting those micros into the program without broadcasting in spring?
I know we can somehow get them incorporated into our liquids but want to keep costs down. Also not sure about compatability of liquid fertilizer when you add micros? TIA

I am currently using a dry product from Mozaic MESZ or MES-10 that contain Sulphur have also used a dry Zinc product along with AMS when strip tilling in the fall or spring. Have had tissue test taken from fields that where fall stripped and they came back with adequate to more than adequate levels of zinc and Sulphur don't use Boron as test's show I don't need it. Use to put down liquid fertilizer with planter but after running some side by side trails for a couple of years didn't see any benefit to starter as my starter mix is in the dry fertilizer strip.

are you saying you only want to use liquid strip tilling? if so I cannot answer your question. I am strip tilling pulling a montag cart with a gandy orbit air on it. i have been just blending what i need all in dry form and running it through that, last year i started putting manganese on with some MAP and KMAG and saw excellent results. the one farm needed manganese (or so tissue samples said so) so i tried a little an saw great results. seems to me if you can use a product like mentioned above (MESZ) then its a homerun when you don't need to blend. before that i tried to apply different stuff foliar with my sprayer with little to no result. the dry form of most of these nutrients seem to be far more less expensive in that form, seems to mix well and stripping them at about a 4 inch depth seems to be a good spot to put them. i could be wrong doing it all but whatever.

No case farmer I wasn't really clear but I would be banding dry with the strip till unit with cart.

Hi,

Best of luck with your strategy.

If you are set up with liquid on the planter, consider focusing your micros and maybe S with the planter.

I like some N with the planter (not in furrow) as much or more than a complete drinkable starter as I like N in proximity to the corn row and cost/performance of the expensive starters doesn't seem that great "here".

I blend thiosul 12-0-0-26S with 28-0-0 or 32-0-0 and add some Nulex 20 Zn for my planter fertilizer cocktail. This is applied 2" off the row not far below the surface.

Having both dry (strip till) and planter liquid would really give you options.

Tom
