Subject: Hoop buildings

Iowa
Would love to build a pole building, but its outta the budget for a few years. Been seeing some hoop buildings on AuctionTime and other sites, that are for lack of better term -- cheap. I understand you get what you pay for, and from searching there are guys here who have bought them in the last year or so -- wondering how their holding up. I'd try to put it on a pony wall to gain height - I really have no equipment storage other than if everythings unhooked -- so once planter is hooked up, it sits out till done, from preseason checkup till done -- same with combines, and any tractors with implements. I've had electrical equipment damaged cause sprayer tractor sat out in storms (again no spot to put it tractor roof leaked). I dont farm a lot, but do a lot of wrenching - I'm thinking of placing it about 20-30 ft from my shop -- I could work on planter and combine in the building, where now I end up pulling it out from 3 miles away, and working right outside the roll up door, so if its raining or snow, or muddy I get to work in it. Shop fits tractors and trucks in , just not the planter and combine.

I live in NW IA so we get snow and wind -- Do I dare turn it running east west -- knowing it'd take wind from the north - itd be protected from the south, and west -- I'm thinking if I put a 4-6 foot wall up and built on that that I 'd be able to keep the snow off the building -- If I need to turn N/S then my spot isnt as good, I'd probably go with a smaller building. Either way it'd be nice to get stuff done inside in March when its nicer out, so that its done a couple weeks in advance.

Above are the results of some of the ones I was looking at -- the results indicate you could get them really cheap. I'm thinking of either a 30x60 or 85 with the pony wall, or a 40x60 or 80 "premium" building that would stand alone. Just curious if some of the others that bought them would be proud of them today or are they "gone with the wind"

Not the answer you are looking for..
I would never buy one of those, wood/steel or bust for this farm.

Whatever you do, get one with the double truss. I have a Winkler 42 x 60 facing north and south primarily for round bale storage. It sits on 8" x 8" treated posts 3' tall. It was put up in '01 and still holding up well.

Have a 40 x 60 Coverall. Built in 2003 still standing. If you do build one go with steel ends. Will stand up better to wind than fabric. Wind does not affect rest of building with it being curved.

We got one here from Farm Tech................Think its 30 x 60 if I remember correctly. Its over 15 years old and still has the original tarp on it yet. For the price it works, but would rather have a real building. I would put it where you have access to all sides, we take a snow rake and pull the snow off ours when it gets deep. Didn't put ours on a pony wall, got their anchors and just sat it on shale, those are a POS, we just took ratchet straps and ran them from the center to equipment if we were expecting wind and not moving anything in our out. Works but isn't a real building, but its better than the big blue shed. I priced out a replacement cover from Farm Tech and about fell over when the cover cost almost as much as the building complete when we got it. I plan on just getting a regular tarp and pulling it over the current one come spring for the time being unless I find someone who supplies a tarp that will fit for less, I plan on putting a metal frame building up to replace it in the near future.

I bought one last winter, just got it up last week. 50x80, frame is well made and fit together well, tarp seems ok. It's survived 3 days of wind gusts 40+ mph. Directions are almost worthless, lots of trial and error.

I have a 30x60 on a pony wall . Also have a 50x100 winkler. I like both buildings. I am down by Sioux city if you want to see mine or email good.

I know when I retire they can come down and no more property tax.

I have a Clearspan (farmtek) 30x72 that I put up in 08. I have never removed snow from the tarp it comes off pretty soon on its own. Mine sits ends north and south. My neighbor put up a couple nicer hoops with the double trusses then he found that pole sheds were cheaper.

One person says they are a lot cheaper than a pole barn, another says cost as much as pole barn. Is that a cheap lumberyard pole barn or a Morton? Is that a cheap hoop barn from Auctiontime or a brand name? What are good and poor quality brands of hoop barns? I'm sure wide variation in quality for both hoops and pole barns. Main difference in hoop quality would probably be tarp quality/longevity. Which hoops to stay away from? Any body had to replace their tarp yet? How long do tarps last and what does it cost to replace? People around here say same thing on cost. Some say hoop lot cheaper, some say cost as much as pole barn. All of the hoop owners I have talked to love theirs. All say they would build another. They all have theirs on pony wall. Some have steel ends.

I would personally put my money into a pole shed. Price out materials for a building minus the sidewalls and get a local builder or some buddies to help put it up. Come back with the sidewalls as budget allows. Once trusses were set and braced up square we finished the last 3 buildings ourselves and saved a bunch of money over one of the big name builders.

Yes from auctiontime, picked up in Minneapolis. I paid $8,200 for it. Way cheaper than a pole building. I priced out other brand name hoop buildings, and they are almost the same price as a pole building.
