West Central Iowa | Trying to figure out what series of Eaton axle I have on my 79 Chevy C-70 truck. The truck has Dayton 'spoke' wheels and hydraulic brakes, with an electric shift 2 speed. I'm attaching 2 pics to also help. The number 106411 is stamped on the edge of the differential. From what I can gather that is for the differential only. The axle shafts have the number 62165 on the edge of the outside hub. The end of the axle shaft has a 6 inch diameter hub with a 12 bolt pattern as seen in the picture. The axle tube is square where the u bolts attach around the leaf springs. I understand some of these axles were round in this area. From the plate inside my glove compartment, it looks like it has a 6.5 ratio differential. The truck vin is C17089V167069 if that helps. One place I called seemed to think it was a series 17200, which would be a 17,000 pound axle. In researching, I've seen listings for series 17200, 17202, and 17220. I assume these are all different versions of a similar axle. There is no id tag or stamp showing any kind of numbers like this on my axle. Can someone help me make sense of the numbers I have and what to ask for when searching the net or calling used truck parts places? West Central Iowa | I know how to use google and have found some information. I have been unable to find the identifying numbers on the axle housing itself that is shown on the eaton website. My axle does not have the metal tag shown in most parts books or online searches. I am asking here in case someone has dealt with this axle before and can tell me how to easily identify it just by it's physical characteristics.

West Central Iowa | Do you mean the 17200 series? I found a chart online that this series has a load rating of 18,000 #. There are a few C65's for salvage in my area that use a different rear axle that only has a 5 bolt cap over the outside of the axle tube. I assume this is either the 15 or 16 hundred series axle with 16000# rating.

Winkler, Manitoba Canada | I do not know how the series relates to the axle rating. Over the years we had three different GM trucks. Two had the 18500 rear axle rating and they had the axle wheel end as in your picture. One had a 17000 lb rated axle and it had the 5 bolt cap on the wheel end. All were electric two speed axles.

West Central Iowa | I'm still learning the more I search. It appears this axle was only used in the C70, which has a higher gvw than the C65, so that makes sense. Was one of your trucks a C70 and the the other 2 C65's?

Had a bad ring & pinion in a old IH this past spring was able to id it . Ended up replacing entire rear axle out of a L series ford I had sitting in the fence row went from a square tube to a round tube axle . lucked out and didnt even have to cut the drive shaft. Probably cant get new parts for that(1979)

Winkler, Manitoba Canada | One of the trucks with the heavy axle was from the 1960's and I do not recall the model. The other two were both C65's. One had a GVW of 24000lbs (7front, 17rear) and the other had a GVW of 27500 lbs. (9front, 18500 rear).
